I have an AMD Athlon II X2 255 on an ASUSTeK M5A78L-M LX (AM3R2) and was wondering (hoping) that I could upgrade it to a quad-core X4 cpu. Is it possible and if so what else would have to change?

Solution
No it is not possible because the x2 is a am3 processor and the x4 is a fm2+ socket processor. You would have to change the motherboard to a compatible fm2+. While that is an option, you can also get a fx series processor with a TDP of 95w or less because it's all tat board supports. You will not be able to overclock though. And what is your GPU? A low end GPU will bottleneck your system.
