Wanted to get some input on data recovery services.

Our server had a VM that was restored to a snapshot from 2014. backups were failing since that time, and we didnt realize it. so we have no good backups. Our ERP system was on that VM, so all the data in the ERP system is now back to 2014.

Here's the rub. We have a Raid 1 set up, and one of the drives fell offline off the raid array before the old snapshot was applied taking the drive back to 2014 state.

So the drive that went offline that has current data - I was hoping we could get a data restore company to pull a bootable image of the VM off that drive. Or at least pull our ERP database files off the drive.

Nothing is mechanically wrong with the drive. its a cheetah SAS 15k spin drive.

I took the drive to datadoctors and they had it in their lab for like a week, and werent able to get anything off it. I'm thinking data doctors was way out of their league.

I tried another company werecoverdata, and they said they could do it, but the qoute was outrageous. like the price of a car, and also they said that if they recover it might not be bootable and there could be corruption in the ERP data files. which wouldnt work for us. the erp system wil not work with corrupt data.

So any suggestions on other companies to try. i want to give it one last shot with a reputable company who has experience restoring VM's and that isnt gonna charge more than a few grand.

Was thnking of going with Gillware

I ended up going with Gillware, and they were sucessful with the data restore, yes it was expensive, but it was risk free, no diagnostic fee, i only paid after i verified the data was restored. After Gillware did the restore, they spinned up our restored VM, and i was able to verify data that way. lesson learned, will be paying a lot more attention to our backup protocol. We are now using Datto for backup.

Did you break the raid1 array before restoring the 2014 backup? If not then the other drive also has the 2014 backup. Thats the nature of raid1; sorry.

Also no honest recovery company will guarantee that anything is recoverable at all. Any that do I would pass right on by. That's the nature of data recovery; sorry.

Lastly, yes; professional data recovery is expensive.
