Hello guys. I am trying to see if anyone has any pictures or documentation of how to remove the Northbridge heatsink from an ASUS Sabertooth x58 motherboard. My idle temps are in the high 60s I understand that this board normally runs a little bit hot, but since this board is so old and had so much use I thought it would be a good idea to try and replace the thermal compound/pad. Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

The unified heatsink assembly

is held on by a mixture of screws and spring loaded pins/pegs. You can undo the pegs by applying a force above the pins to loosen the springs tension and then pinch on the peg feet to get them to pass through the holes on the PCB. The screws, well, they are self explanatory.

If temps are a concern you could attach a fan to the northbridge heatsink like so:

but the idea to change out the TIM and pads ins't a bad idea either. I would also like to point out, that you should retain the thermal pads for emergencies sake since thermal pads are used in events when the heatsink cannot make a flush contact on the heatsource which would otherwise be a gap and not help in dissipating the chipsets heat. Please note the thickness of the thermal pads and with the vanilla pads in reserve(backup, without throwing them away) see if the TIM is evenly distributed after you screw it down from under the motherboard.

You may want to go through this for additional food for thought.
