Help me with my first build! $650USD budget or 930 NZD (In NZ)

Got alot of experience with computers, but never built a full one from scratch. So far I've got a good budget build going and just need some help with choosing a power supply as I'm not too sure about capacitor quality etc.

My chosen components so far are:

Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor
Asus H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory
Thermaltake Core V21 MicroATX Mini Tower Case

Note: I already own a SSD and not looking for a screen just yet, just the computer at this stage as I can use my TV in the mean time while I save for a 1080p monitor.
Haven't chosen a GPU yet, I'm leaning heavily towards Nvidia's GTX 960.

Let me know what you guys think so far!

The 80 plus rating is purely based on efficiency, the S12II series are tier 2 so they're very good.

Actual power consumption in that build will be around 250W so 430W should be plenty. The 520W unit shouldn't cost much more though, get that if you're concerned.

It is a good ranking system for PSU's, Tier 1 is the best PSU's on the market. Tier 2 are very good but not as good as Tier 1 and Tier 3 is the lowest I'd go for a gaming build and I'd avoid them unless on a tight budget. Tier 4 are the cheap 'you get what you pay for' PSUs which I'd only use for home/office systems on a very tight budget. I'd avoid any other PSU's at all costs.

At this budget you should easily be able to manage a tier 2 like the Antec EA-430 430W or Seasonic S12II 430W


The GTX 960 is pretty good, the GTX 950 is worth looking at as well though if it is a lot cheaper because the performance isn't far behind at all. A superclocked GTX 950 performs the same as a stock 960. That isn't the case with a lot of other GPU's. For example a superclocked GTX 960 isn't anywhere near a GTX 970.

Hey Jm,

Thanks for the response, It looks like I will be able to afford the S12II 430W but will 430W be enough to power my build if I get a gtx 960?

The GTX 950 is cheaper but not by much, and I would rather run a stock 960 than a super clocked 950 as it could be buying problems.

I also noticed the Seasonic S12II is only 80plus Bronze rated. Does this correlate with quality or is it just a measure of efficiency? (done some research this is just power efficiency right?) Tier is more important.

P.S. Thanks for the link I will definitely use that to help get a power supply.

Really only 250W? How did you get that figure, did you just add the graphics card wattage and cpu TDP together?

Wow that build puts mine to shame, looks great! Only thing is that I Live in New Zealand so I can't purchase anything from Newegg but I can with certain things on amazon. I will 100% try and find these parts locally and on amazon, it looks great. Also without a cpu cooler (i3 should be fine with stock) and without a ssd (already have one) that should drop the price considerably. Thanks!

I know right, It's ridiculous. The difference just between the h110 and h170 is nearly $100 its crazy . Do you think anything would be wrong with the asus h110 motherboard?
I can get the seasonic SII 430w off Amazon for $100Nzd too so ill get that. Do you recommend the 950 over the 960 aswell? probably a good $50 difference between the two. I see I can get a gtx 960 on amazon for $300
 
i dont like the h110 due 2 ram slots , not good onbaord audio and less features compared to a h170 board.

950 opver the 960 yes the difference is very minor and not worth the money.

430w is enjouh for now but for a gtx 970 u want a reliable 500w powersupply the antec is a decent 500w and the seasonci a good 430w, sthill i would go for the antec because i dont think u want to stick forever with a 950.

Yeah TDP gives a pretty good guide on what power you'd consume if that part is running at 100%. CPU is around 50W, probably less because you won't be using the integrated graphics. 120Wish for the GPU and max 80-100W for everything else.

@outlander - Thanks mate good build, I think I've sorted my build out now everything apart from the motherboard.

@Jmsellar - Ahh I see cheers. I'm caught up between getting a H110 or an H170 chipset motherboard. I am only planning to use 8gb memory (2 x 4gb), i3 cpu and a single GTX gpu so do you think I would even see a difference between the two in performance? I notice the H110 uses older PCI 2.0 instead of the newer 3.0 as the H170 uses but would I actually notice this in real world use? I am going to be using it for gaming + study and videos

Hey sorry didn't see your reply earlier. What's your reasoning for the B150 board? I see earlier you said the H110 is much inferior in features compared to the h170 so why have you chosen the b150 here in this build?
 


because the b motherboard is 50 dollars cheaper and features 4 ram slots.

UPDATE:

So I've totally changed my whole build because Intel is just a theif and a greedy hog for money. I can get a much better quality build with AMD using a 8320 cpu and A much more decent mobo with more potential. Thanks for all your help guys it made me realize Intel is just a rich persons gaming rig haha.
Edit: Same with Nvidia!

the architect from fx series come out of 2012, intel has got a faster single stronger core with better architecture WITH hyper threading.

this results in better gaming performance also you can upgrade to an i5/ i7* and believe me they have got no competition from amd yet...(zen releases later this year so whoknkows)...

i5600k gives the same fps as an i7 6700k in games, the major difference is hyper threading which would be better for streaming triple a games and a lot of video rendering.

Shit man idk you're probably right. Just so much research my brain is exploding with 1s and 0s hahaha. I do like how intels i3 has the 14nm process and is only 47w compared to amds 125w... that would be alot less heat... Still don't know though. I can't afford an i5 either. So you're saying I should stick to intel and nvidia? They're probably the most reliable right? and if zen comes around and is a great cpu i would only have to change the mobo and cpu i guess... hmmm

this is my first build so you can understand why I'm jumping back and forth between ideas. Still learning alot

Bit of an awkward time to be building a pc then don't you think haha! I feel compelled to wait until they get release because I'm looking forward to Zen but that could be over 5 months away and same with the GPUS. It's certainly a tough one.

I would prefer a larger core count than an i3 since everything is heading down the path of multithreading - alot more futureproof with an octa-core.

So it's kinda like I'm at a cross roads not knowing which way to turn, could turn left and get intel i3, right and go amd fx, or go straight and cross the intersection (wait 4-5 months) and get zen and new gpu. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....................
 
Actually you are correct to think that you can get better performance from AMD for the same price . In some games intels stronger cores pay off . But in most newer games thats not particularly true and the extra processing power of 6 or 8 AMD cores pays off in online play . In games like BF4 the 8 core leaves the intel dual core in the dust .

But there are two reasons to still consider the intl build . AMD FX is nearing the end of its life . In a few months it will be completely replaced and no parts will be compatible going forward . Not RAM , not motherboards .
You also have to be a bit careful in part selection. Only 970 and 990 series chipsets fully support FX processors . The cheap m-ATX boards are a waste of money . You also have to be careful to avoid MSI's 970 boards . Over heating and fires . Leave those alone

The Intel build would give you another generation of updates in a couple of years

So its gain now , or gain later

Anyway a competent AMD gamer on a budget comes out like this .
Trimming the processor to an FX 6300 will still give you better multiplayer gaming than the intel

The 8320 will clock to 8350 speeds on the stock cooler [ which is identical to the 8350]
The FX 6300 will hit 4+ GHz on the stock cooler if you dont mind the noise .

The power supply I listed is more than adequate . Even the 8 core at 8350 speeds will only be at around 125 watts .

Either is far more powerful than the i3
