Hi everyone.

I'm looking at upgrading my CPU cooler with one of the ones listed below and just wanted to know peoples thoughts and experiences with them:

Prolimatech Megahalems Red (Amazon, £50 with no fans)
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/prolimatech-megahalems-red-series-cpu-cooler-review/

be qiuet Dark Rock 3 (eBay, £55 with a fan)
http://www.bequiet.com/en/cpucooler/483

Thermalright Macho Zero (Amazon, £55 with no fans)
http://www.thermalright.com/html/products/cpu_cooler/macho_zero.html

Currently have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo (really good yet cheap cooler) which does the job, but I'm a sucker for a sexy looking PC so want to upgrade for aesthetics and sound levels. I have a black/red build (actually by accident, just had my eye on these parts because of discounts). Cooling performance is important but I'm not looking to overclock really, maybe in the future once my hardware is starting to get dated.

Was thinking of buying a 140mm duct shroud for the Macho so no extra noise is added, but I really like the look of the Megahalems and Dark Rock 3.
Anyone know how quiet the Megahalems is with a fan? Was thinking of the Prolimatech Ultra Sleek Vortex 140 mm fan as I have silly Corsair Vengeance high profile RAM (don't buy it, please just go for the low profile ones haha).

Sorry for the life story. Thanks for any feedback!

Not important for this thread but in case you are wondering :p PC specs:

Intel i5 4690K (not overclocked... yet)
ASUS Maximus VII Ranger Mobo
Gigabyte GTX 970 Windforce x3 (sadly not G1 gaming with backplate but meh, sales)
Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1866MHz DDR3 RAM (Red)
Samsung 850 Evo 120GB SSD
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Cooler
NZXT H440 Case (Black/Red)
Antec TruePower Classic 650W PSU (80+ Gold)

well you can see from just here at tome guys wit them ''fancy'' top end coolers and still post my cpu is hot or temp issues and all

I think 90% is installation [ too tight , too loose , crooked , too much paste too little , quality paste coolers base plate straight /level/milled /even ect... ] to me the cooler is the hardest thing in a build and its a fine line between proper cooling and temps and not ..

I been using a heap coolermaster vortex plus on 3 or so builds and now on this intel 4670 so far pounding on the cpu I see maybe 74c on a core full load stressing ?? [and most time full of dust - lol...]

look at some of these in a custom search and the ''nice'' coolers they use...

Yeah, that's the one I'm interested in :p The regular Dark Rock 3. I like it's looks and it's very quiet (although apparently the Macho Rev. B is quieter and better at cooling at low fan RPM) and I don't need the extra cooling performance of the Pro edition as I won't be overclocking much and don't want to have to buy low profile RAM.

Like I said, I'm mostly interested in hearing peoples experiences with either the Megahalems, Macho Rev. B or Dark Rock 3, or if anyone has other suggestions for red/black coolers that aren't too expensive and look good :)

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/all.html?refine=4690+temps

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/all.html?refine=cpu+bad+temps

the cooler is only 10% of the process how its mounted makes the diff in correct cooling or not

[opinion]

they kinda talk about it here on the uneven base

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/core-i7-coolers-roundup_16.html

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/thermalright-silver-arrow_2.html

with that it can leave uneven paste spread and air pockets or cracks hi/low spots and with that it can be the diff between a chip running nice and cool or temp issues ?

its those little things that can cost you or give headaches just comes along as part of experience as you learn its not like I never had to pull a cooler back off and redo

theres just a bit more then getting the ''best'' cooler and just slapping it on

[more opinion ]

Damn, the xbitlabs.com links you posted are really useful! I didn't know the CPU itself could also have an uneven surface. When I come to changing my cooler I'll have to check mine. Thanks for those :)

That's true. I know the ones I've chosen are pretty much what I'm looking for when it comes to cooling and acoutics, and I've heard their build quality is of a good standard.

As for fans (if I need them), I'll probably end up going for Noctua NF-F12's and just carefully spray paint them black/red lol. You can't knock their performance
