Hey all,

My friend is getting this error message for his computer when he tries to boot it. He has Windows 7 installed on a single HDD, as well as all his other software and programs.

"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

I had him go into his BIOS and check to make sure his HDD was detected and that it was first in his boot priority. His boot priority is the following:

Windows Boot Manager (P1: ST1000DM003-1CH162)

>

P0: ST1000DM003-1CH162 (953869MB)

>

Disc Drive

It seems in order to me, and the computer is detecting the hard drive, but it won't boot it, only gives the error message above. There have been no changes or updates or downloads since last night when it was working perfectly. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Solution
If it is already on UEFI you could try changing it to legacy and see if that helps.

I don't think resetting the CMOS will help to be honest but you could give it a try.

It sounds like your Windows installation is corrupted, if you need to back up any data you could plug the drive into another PC to copy everything across then I would re-install Windows.
- You could try enabling UEFI boot and see if that helps. On ASUS boards you go to boot then CSM then change boot from storage devices to UEFI. Or if it is already on UEFI, try legacy mode instead.

- Maybe try again after removing all other sata/USB devices except mouse and keyboard and try again?

If neither of those works it may be that your Windows installation has become corrupted in some way and you may need to re-install it.

It's already on UEFI. He tried removing all from except the necessary satas and got the same thing.

Thinking about resetting the CMOS, or of the repair on the Windows 7 discs would be helpful?

When this happens there are three possible causes.

In the bios of the motherboard.

1.The Sata interface mode has changed, from the original setting when windows was installed.

Check to see what the setting is, try Ahci mode first of all.
If the system was pre bought, and built try the setting also of Raid, if the system has multiple hard drives fitted.

2. Make sure that CSM mode is enabled, and set to manual.
For the detection mode set the option to: Legacy op rom / Uefi booting of devices.

3. In the first boot order list from 1 to 6 devices select the hard drive known to contain the windows os.

Seagate : ST1000DM003 Hard Disk.

Scroll down the page till you get to the other two entries for boot devices.

1 and 2.

Set P0 to be device number one.

And P1 to be device listing number two

1. P0 ST1000DM003

2. P1 ST1000DM003

Disable fast booting.
And secure boot.

Check to see if the board has multiple chipsets for Sata devices and interface modes.

One done save the new changes made in the bios and restart the system.
If the hard drive, or the boot sector has not been corrupted by other means such as a forced shut down or loss of power to the system when windows was running. It should boot from the set drive with windows os installed on it.
