I'm serious thinking of purchasing an arftermarket air cooler radiator for my CPU but I'm not sure if it is really worth paying for. Sure the components seem to be really effective at cooling the CPU, but how much better are they than the stock one supplied with the CPU?

Solution

The stock HSF is fine when not overclocking and, although uncommon, there are some aftermarket HSFs which are worse than stock.
If it's a newer Intel CPU then the stock coolers are usually okay-ish and will get the job done fine as long as you have adequate case airflow... However, if you have an AMD CPU (especially in the FX series) then the stock coolers are almost total rubbish (unless it's an OEM Wraith cooler) and you'll see a great improvement with an aftermarket cooler.

My CPU is an Intel i5 bought in late 2014. Apart from that my computer's air flow is not very good so that's why I'm looking into fans and improved cooling. Thanks for the quick reply.

the intel stock cooler is made for a set amount of cooling in wattages. it not bad for light loads and games. the issue i have with it and cheap coolers are the plastic parts on it and it legs. over time with thermal cycling the plastic push pins can fail and the cooler can fall off or lose so bad the cpu temp goes real high. every system i build even for a friend i replace the stock cooler with one with metal screws and a black plate. (eve 212 or the newer h7 that easer to install). with a good air cooler it should last a long time before you have to repaste or replace the fan on the cooler.

My processor is Intel core i5-4790k 3.50ghz. I'm just worried about the cooler size because my case allows for a max of 155mm height, and if I'm thinking of the right one, the hyper evo 212 is too big for my case.

I might just be a 4790 without the 'k', I'm not 100% sure but I know it is an i5. As for the cryorig H&, I think I did look at that and was fairly interested but the store I was going to buy it from didn't stock it.
The one I'm interested in now is the Thermaltake Fior Silent 12. It's 140mm and it has pretty good ratings I believe.
