Q9550 at 80-85 Celcius = dangerous?

Hi all, I have an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 which heated up to 84 degrees C after ~20 minutes of CPU-Z stress testing, and 81 degrees C max after playing GTA V for 3-4 hours. It's running on an Intel Stock cooler. Are these temperatures dangerous and capable of causing damage to the CPU?

Paste was re-applied last year.

Thanks

Solution
The cpu will shut down to prevent damage if it gets dangerously hot.
I think that temperature is around 100c.

The stock cooler can be tricky to install well.
If your idle temperatures are much more than 10-15c. over ambient think about remounting.

Yes, the chip is overclocked mildly from 2.83GHz to 3.18GHz @"Auto" VCore, which never exceeds 1.2V as it seems. The idle temps appear to be about 30c over ambient......so I guess that maybe a problem. But another note is that i only have 1 case fan, which is sucking air in from the back.

Thanks for the replies guys :)

Okay, I'll see what I can do. I do have a second case fan, but I unplugged it because it was making a massive amount of noise. It sounds as if something is blocking it, but that isn't the case. Any idea what could be wrong with the fan?

I'll think about the paste, and dust is not a problem, I keep it very clean :D

Could be a bad bearing in which case it is new fan time.

Those are pretty high temps for that old yorkfield. And if you overclock you may want a aftermarket cooler. There doesn't seem to be a great selection of coolers for the lga 775 socket left on the market these days. But there are still a few on new egg if you feel like investing any money in a very aged build.

Try orienting the fan to exhaust the hot air.

Yes I am considering a new system, either Z170 mobo + 6700K or 5820K + X99 mobo. I returned the Q9550 to stock frequency and it didn't go over 76 Celsius on core 0 for the stress test :D
