Upgrading My Motherboard - System turns on then immediately off within 1 second

I just purchased new CPU (Intel i7-6700), motherboard (MSI Z170A TOMAHAWK AC), and RAM (GeIL Super Luce DDR4 3000 RAM). Look out the old parts, and replaced with these parts.

I tried powering on the system with the power button, but nothing happened.

Tried re-seating the RAM and CPU, then the system would power on, then immediately off within 1 second.

Sometimes it would repeat on its own... Power on for 1 second, then off. On for a second, then off.

I left it doing the on/off cycle for a minute, until it actually booted up to the BIOS. Thinking all might be fine, but now the system will not turn on at all. Power switch does nothing. No click no lights, no fans spinning, nothing.

Any thoughts? I'd hate to have a bad motherboard, but wondering if anyone has had a similar problem with MSI motherboards?

If you replace the motherboard,
and cause the same problem, it means not the motherboard issue.
so I think it the time to replace the PSU.

I dont think there do have the PSU compatible issue with chipset,
but replace it with the new one, to see if the problem solve

Thanks for your reply. This power supply is kind of old. It's a Kingwin LZ-1000 1000-Watt Power Supply. It is dated 2009. Its motherboard power connector and CPU power connector both fit, and are installed tightly. I re-seated the power connectors when I re-seated the CPU and RAM.

Could this power supply not be compatible, even though the power connectors fit?

Okay, just tried that but no help. Took the motherboard out of the case, rested it on an anti-static bag and plugged in only motherboard power, CPU power, and the case's power switch connector. Now the motherboard does not power on at all. No 1 second on then off. Now no matter what I try, the motherboard no longer powers on.

I imagine if there was a problem with the CPU or RAM, it would still power on.

I can try another power supply tomorrow, to see if maybe the PSU went kaput. I have some doubts that is the cause, since it seems an unlikely coincidence it would fail on the same day I replace the motherboard, unless there is a real compatibility issue with Kingwin PSUs and new LGA1151 motherboards?

I hope it's not a bad motherboard. RMAs suck, but at least I bought it from Newegg which is pretty good about exchanges.

This was a GREAT tip! I tested the power supply as shown in the video (by bridging two power pins with a paperclip) and the fans did spin correctly. So the power supply seems to be functioning.

I assume the new Z170A chipset motherboards are fully compatible with the same power supplies used in 2nd Generation Intel CPUs? The power plugs from the Kingwin LZ-1000 PSU fit just as they did in my Intel Core i7-2600K system.

If so, it seems i have a bad MSI motherboard?

It still does not power on at all.

Try leaving only the CPU, CPU cooler installed, both 24 and 8 pin power cables connected. No other components/wires.
Start the board by shortly touching with a screwdriver the 2 pins on the motherboard corresponding to the case power switch. See if the CPU fan does spin.

Now this is weird. I purchased a NEW motherboard from the store, tried it, and SAME problem. The motherboard does not power on. WTF! This time no fluctuating of power. It just does not power on.

New motherboard is also an MSI motherboard, Z170A chipset, but different model. Keep in mind, I already confirmed the PSU works with the paperclip trick.

Could it be a problem with a Kingwin PSU being incompatible with the new chipset? The motherboard power and CPU power are the only things plugged in to the motherboard, all plugs are in firm and tight. Has anyone seen a power supply be incompatible with the new motherboards?

Update. I got it working by replacing the Kingwin LZ-1000 power supply with a Corsair power supply.

It could have been the power cord. After replacing, I noticed the power cord that was used with the Kingwin was stripped a little near the end. I threw out that power cord.

I moved the Kingwin power supply to an older system with a 2nd generation Intel processor, and it works fine. I've never heard of a power supply not working with the new Z170 Intel chipsets, or perhaps I had a power cord problem, but perhaps that is the case.
