ssd missing space

This could be a newb question...however i noticed my free space wasn't what it should be. I have a 120g ssd, and i know after formating you lose a little. however I was trying to total up how much space was being used by (right clicking-properties-size on disk). after totaling all these numbers i should have around 70gigs free however it only shows i have 42.5 free??

any help would be appreciated.

1. A "120GB" drive is actually 111GB
2. You are probably missing a lot of hidden files. Restore points, hibernation, etc.

In addition, your OS has probably made one or more partitions invisible to normal use.

So there is no way to get that space back? I have Windows 7, Microsoft office and video card drives on there. Just seems like there should be more space.

Check your Restore Point settings. How much is used there?

Those 2 big purple spaces are almost certainly your page file and the hibernation file. ~28GB

70GB - 42.5GB = 27.5GB

Page file? How much RAM do you have? You can probably turn that down some.

sorry, im not sure what page file is. a bit of a newbie. I have 16gigs of ram

Page file: A chunk of your hard drive that the system has reserved for use for when you run out of actual RAM. It swaps data back and forth between RAM and that 'page file'

With 16GB RAM, you can turn that page file size WAY down. I have 16GB as well, and a page file of 1GB min/max.
Yours may well be set to 8GB or so.

What OS is this? We can tell you how to find it, and change the settings.

I actually already had hibernate turned off...

Unless you ran that command line, that space would still be taken up. Even if hibernation was 'disabled'.
And that windirstat shows a big purple chunk.

I ran the command prompt, however i didn't see the battery option in my advanced power settings

Ok, great did your settings for page files. and I believe I ran the prompt correctly, just didn't see the battery option. I have now free'd up that 28.8 gigs in the image above that was attributed to <Files>.

Maybe you should also run Disk cleanup (available from disk properties > Tools) to get rid of old temp files and restore points.
