I updated the drivers on my gpu the other day and during boot up I got a few weird characters where instead of 1's I was getting I'm etc. Then the screen went to very low resolution. I couldn't change it so I tried wiping the drivers with DDU and trying again.
The install came up with failure error with video drivers. Uninstalled again and reinstall but windows reboots without finishing. I've tried older drivers too but the same thing happens also have the weird characters during boot up. Is my graphics card dying / dead? Or am I doing something wrong?

Mobo - Gigabyte LM78 USB-3
AMD FX 8350
GFX - R9 280X
Windows 10.

I'm not ruling out that your GPU may be dying, but first of all are you running the latest DDU?

The newest version fixes the Vulkan removal which was added by the last Crimson driver update. It also has other small removal fixes. It is possible that Vulkan wasn't removed properly and is causing a driver conflict with the latest Crimson drivers. I would recommend running the latest Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) V15.7.5.5 and then downloading the newest Crimson drivers from

Hopefully that will fix your GPU related driver issues.

You should also be aware that your motherboard only has 4+1 power phase and the FX 8350 processor...

You should also be aware that your motherboard only has 4+1 power phase and the FX 8350 processor should have 8+2 power phase to operate properly. The FX 8350 simply can't operate properly with only 4+1 power phase and it will lead to a lack of performance which may also be adding to your problems.

I had the exact same thing with my r9 280x asus dc2t, I ended up ordering another motherboard, same thing, I took out the card and in about 5times, checked all cables, then everything was fine, a week later, same stuff. Then, I put the card in another PC and the card never did that artifacting where you see on bios letters 1 = I (crossed in the middle sort of) but it did artifact later on. What solved my problem temporarly (at least in game and desktop) is to undervolt the card's core from 1.2v to 1.14v and use a bios that has 1.5v memory voltage instead of stock 1.6v. This works fine, unless I start mining (then it artifacts at beginning, but after a few tries it goes fine for days nonstop).
