I'm posting for my husband because he's much too frustrated to think about this for the next few hours and he's asleep.

He replaced his old cpu, ram, and motherboard yesterday. His new parts are:

mobo: ASUS M5A97 PLUS AM3+ AMD 970/SB950 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD
cpu: AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0 GHz (4.2 GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W FD8350FRHKBOX Desktop Processor
ram: CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B

It will power on, the fans will start, but we can't get it to show a display. We've tried booting with one stick of ram and have swapped them out with no luck. I've read over other threads with similar problems and have checked all of the ideas that I could test. Unfortunately, we don't have another compatible motherboard / processor, so we can't swap them out to see what part may be bad. He works in IT; he'll be asking coworkers today if they have an extra we could borrow for testing.

I apologize if I don't respond until early afternoon when he gets home from work and we can try any suggestions that come up in this thread.

Thanks, guys!

The graphics card PNY G-Force GTX 750. It's about three months old.
The cable is a VGA.

Thank you for that product! I knew we needed something similar, but the one he wanted was $80 and that was just ridiculous.

My husband just reinstalled all of the new pieces and it's working now. Not exactly sure what the original issue was, but it solved the trick. I did end up buying the case speaker, since that's a good part to have on hand anyway. Thank you!
