Recommendations for a reliable low use printer with cheap ink

What is a good, reliable color printer/scanner/copier for occasional printing. I want a printer that will last for years of occasional use, and will sometimes go unused for months at a time, and then may be required to print up to 30 pages all at once. I do not care about slow printing or latency as long as it doesn't take 30 minutes to print 30 pages. I would also like long lasting cartridges that are either cheap ink or refillable and would be willing to pay more up front for that. I do not need the highest resolution, 600dpi should be fine for me.

If it's only for occasional use I recommend that you rule out buying any inkjet printer model.
They require regular use (a colour printout at least once every three or four days) otherwise the printhead will become blocked with old ink that has dried to a paste, stopping fresh ink from getting through.

If allowed to get really bad, even the printer's self-cleaning cycle cannot clear the blockage (I speak from personal experience here by the way). You then have the hassle of removing the printhead to soak it in soapy water overnight. No fun I can tell you.

You need to go for a laser printer which uses toner, not liquid ink. Or ask a friend to print off what you need and throw them a few bob as a "thank you".

Ok so what model Laser Printer/scanner is good? The one I am looking at is the Brother Printer MFCL2720DW Compact Laser All-In One with Wireless Networking and Duplex Printing. Is Brother a good manufacturer? I heard that they do not make their cartrages shut off when they still have ink in them, so that would be a big plus.

I think brother laser printer is good choice, easy to install and their cartridge without the chips and won't be affected by the chip faulty issue. Also, their printer supplies are also cheaper than the other brands and especially the compatible one.

Grab a Canon MG5760. They are cheap, they use a thermal printhead which is much more reliable than the piezo and they are cheap to run as they work brilliantly with generic inks.
