Solution
I may not have been clear either...

What I suggest is

  • Take laptop drive out of laptop - put laptop drive safely aside so it won't get damaged and confused with netbook drive.
Take netbook drive out of netbook - put netbook aside, we don't need that.
Put netbook drive into laptop - as we know bios works in it and you can swap the boot order to match the ISO of Windows
use the windows iso to do the formatting of the netbook drive
Clean the contents off Netbook drive.
    Take it out of laptop
Put laptop drive back in to laptop
Use netbook as frisbee if you want to :)

Sorry, I though ISO was a WIN 10 one. You can create a Win 10 install USB using this: Windows 10 Media Creation tool

If I Misunderstood and you just want to use...
Welcome to the TH community, Paul!

It sounds like the HDD might have failed as well. I'd recommend you use the same bootable flash drive with the formatting utility on another computer and see if you will be able to successfully wipe the HDD from there. Another alternative would be to connect the drive externally via SATA-to-USB cable with an additional AC adapter or a docking station and attempt the formatting procedure again.
If it fails once more, you should definitely try using a DOS version of an HDD diagnostic utility that will allow to test the health and SMART status of the hard drive without booting into Windows.

Good luck!

yes, might want to explain that in terms a layman can understand :)

I can also see how not having clear instructions could lead to a terrible mistake.

one way to avoid mistakes would be to swap the hdd in laptop with the netbook one and boot off the iso and wipe it, as then the laptop hdd is not in the pc at all and safe from mistakes.

you could follow these instructions and follow the steps until you reach steps 12 or 13, delete all the contents and then hit the little x and cancel out of installer, leaving drive blank - http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html

right this is a much easier to understand ,however i may not have explained my problem too well ,i have the windows 7 usb tool ,and an iso which i downloaded i then run this on the netbook but will only go so far to a point about 65%on the ile expanding bit ,i cant change anything or run command prompt or any other things as it then says a disk read error occurred ,it has only done this after about 6 attempts at running the iso so maybe it has changed something ,but since i cant get into the bios to do anything i m stuck ,also i looked at the link to tenforums but it seems to show how to load windows ten and i know this netbook wont be compatible for that ,thanks again guys and so sorry for being thick ,paul

If I Misunderstood and you just want to use your Win 7 ISO - follow these instructions below until step 11. Steps 11 to 15 show how to clear the drive. The steps above work with win 7 as well

Win 7 clean install instructions

After step 15, hit the little red x in right corner of the windows and cancel out of install.

If you have errors about being able to access drive, there is a good chance drive is dead or dying, and you probably don't need to clean it off as it doesn't work anyway.

Hope that helps :)
