New PC Build Problems

So recently my buddy and I we're in the market to build him a new PC. Both of us have relative experience in building them so we went out and bought the parts required. We finally got everything together, sat down and put everything together. All went smoothly until well, we turned it on. In it's current state the PC turns on, proceeds to try and boot, since we have yet to set the hard drive to the primary boot device, it doesn't do anything. The problem is it only gets so far into boot sometimes and it just shuts off, entirely. There doesn't really seem to be a pattern to it either. Sometimes it'll stay on rather long, other times just shut off almost instantly. Now with the little experience we have with building such PC's we're rather lost and could use whatever expertise there is. We've tried stripping it down to nothing and booting, same results. We've tried the general tests the internet has given us but to no avail. There's is a pure possibility that some of these things just aren't compatible but with the everything that doesn't seem to be the case. If so all and any information is helpful. Can post a video if also that would be helpful.
