I landed a HD7870 for pretty cheap need to make sure i'm fleshing the rest of the build out accordingly

So i'm looking to play current games on medium/high settings at 720p or older games at 1080p,and i'm on a super tight budget so with the HD7870, would a Pentium G4400 be ok at 720p? because up to this point i've been looking at the i3 6100 (which i'm still seriously considering, but you know, if i can cut costs i may as well look into it). i guess the real question is, does scaling down the resolution lower the demand on the CPU or will the G4400 always underperform when compared to the i3 regardless of the resolution. i have to determine the CPU before buying the MOBO/case so any infomation would be awesome!

Solution
CPU usage is determined by the games you play. Also, the G4400 is dual core. The i3 is like a quad core. Games perform better with the i3. Resolution affects the GPU usage is what I think.

"I guess the real question is, does scaling down the resolution lower the demand on the CPU or will the G4400 always underperform when compared to the i3 regardless of the resolution?" yes the i3 is better thats obvious, I'd hope so for double the price. but thats not the question.

well rather than comparing 1080p i3 6100 vs 1080p Pentium G4400, i was meaning more along the lines of: does resolution affect the CPU usage, or is CPU usage more so determined by the physics and mechanics of the game? will the experience at 720p on a G4400 produce similar frame rates as an i3 at 1080p?

A dual-core CPU is inadequate for gaming; simple as that. Any dual-core CPU with an unlocked multiplier is pointless in my opinion. Overclocking appeals to the enthusiast, who are also gamers, but games require more than two threads, so what's the point?

Some games are CPU-bound and some are GPU-bound, but most are the latter.
