My current set up is

Motherboard: Gigabyte - ga-h87m-d3h
Case: Raidmax Horus
PSU: FSP Raider 550 550w
CPU: i7 4790 (non k version)
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 660 2gb

I want to upgrade my GPU to the Asus Strix gtx 970 4gb however I'm not sure/confident that my set up will run well with that card at the moment. I'm just hoping that my card wont be too big for my case, not compatible with my motherboard, require a more powerful PSU etc etc... since this is my first ever upgrade :D thanks for any help!!

You have a tier 4 PSU, built down to a low price. Not exactly the most stable units ever created. Very basic safety circuitry or even thin gauge wiring used. Not for gaming rigs or overclocking systems of any kind. Avoid unless your budget dictates your choice.

The card is compatible. Just get a better PSU like a Seasonic S12II-620w PSU.

Even with that bad quality PSU it has enough wattage to power GTX970 without any issues so basically you don't have to replace anything in order to buy GTX 970. I agree that current psu is really bad and you should upgrade it in the future when you get some more money to evga g1/g2 series or XFX TS/pro/xxx or seasonic like Alan mentioned

It's a cheap PSU, not necessarily a dangerous one. With a 4790k and a 970 he won't be pushing it very hard so he should be just fine. The 970's TDP is only 8W higher than the 660 he already has.

it's a mediocre unit with crappy secondary caps and nasty ripple

but I agree it should run his system IF he NEVER overclocks

XD

OP: DO NOT OVERCLOCK

I wasn't planning on overclocking (just yet) XD I knew that I'd want to upgrade my PSU afterwards however when it comes to the PSU I was just wanting to know if it's safe to run the gtx 970 with it, because I heard it can be dangerous having a graphics card too powerful for the PSU, however it seems like I wont have problems running it normally with my current set up so it looks like I'm buying the 970 tonight then :) thanks a lot everyone! Would the "650W EVGA SuperNOVA G1 Modular PSU" be a good choice?

avoid the g1 and b1

g2, p2, gs, b2 are great

Here's the tier list of the PSU models:

whatever PSU you buy make sure that it's from tier one list, best quality, most reliable and won't fry you components if you get an electrical surge.
