I have my windows key but lost my disk. How would I go about creating a cd and/or usb boot drive for my new build??

Do I download both the 32 & 64 bit iso? Then what? any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

OK...either way.
Win 7 or Win 10.

For Win 7, see the link I posted above and click on Win &
Enter your license key and download the relevant ISO
Create your install media with the other link I posted, or Rufus as mentioned.

For Win 10, again, go to that same link and select Win 10
Create your install media. Either DVD or USB
Install, and activate with your existing Win 7 license key.

Are we straight on this?

Get the media creation tool. It's for windows 10. You may use your win 7 or 8 key during the installation and yes, you should migrate to win 10.

The link USAFRet posted is what you want. It'll validate your key & allow you to download the relevant ISO (I believe you're prompted for 32 or 64bit, otherwise it'll create both and you'll select during install).

As an FYI, if you have an OEM key (as in, it came as a prebuilt), that link likely won't work & you'll need to contact the manufacturer. If you build the system yourself, using an OEM key, same rules apply except you are deemed the manufacturer, so the onus is on you to have the disk...........which can get problematic.

Considering you need the disk, you're reinstalling, correct?
In that case, the suggestion to go to Windows 10 isn't a bad one (assuming your hardware is compatible of course) - use your W7 key to install.

Otherwise, head to the link USAFRet posted, input your key and download the ISO.
I don't know if the W7 option gives the "creation tool", so you may have to make your own disk/USB.

You don't simply drag & drop it onto a USB, I want to make that clear. You need to create a bootable USB.
There are numerous tools available online to accomplish that (assuming MS doesn't provide the media creation tool for W7, which'll create a USB for you). Personally I use Rufus. Never had any issues with it. https://rufus.akeo.ie/

Seriously, man, forget about 7. Get win 10 x64 and never look back.

you said to get the media creation tool and get windows 10? My key is for windows 7, won't i have to dl 7 and then boot up. Then upgrade to 10?

I'll post this PM so others can see it.

In the beginning it was as you said, but as of the november build of W10(which is obviously even older than what you'll be downloading) it accepts win 7 and 8 keys as part of MS's offer of a free upgrade to W10. You just need to do a fresh install of W10 with your old key and, if you don't change your mind, in 30 days your old win license will be upgraded to a win 10 license indefinitely.

If he wishes to go to WIn 10, sure. He has not indicated that yet.

The quote is from a PM OP sent me.
