Overclocking i5 question

I want to know how much of a difference overclocking will make. My i5 is stock-clocked at 3.5 GHz, and I'm planning to overclock it to 4.7 GHz with the NZXT Kraken X31.

Will 1.2 GHz really make a difference in games, and will it be able to stay at a stable temperature with my cooler?

Solution
It depends on the frame rates you are looking to play at and what games are you playing.

Tell me what graphics card you have and the exact model of your i5.

Also what resolution are you playing at?

Solution
Every chip is different, but I got to 4.7 Ghz with my i5 4690K at reasonable temperatures on a $40 air cooler (RAIJINTEK Pallas) It will help only if your CPU is limiting your system. If your GPU is limiting, overclocking will help very little.

It depends on what software and games you are using. (and your GPU)

I'm using Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

I want to play games like Metro Last Light Redux, Crysis 3, and Battlefield 4

Intel Core i5 4690K

EVGA GTX 980 TI SC

Will the NZXT Kraken X41 bring me 4.7 GHz and a stable temperature?

Intel Core i5 4690K,

EVGA GTX 980 TI SC

And I play at 1440p

How much of a difference will 1.2 GHz make in frames if I use the Kraken X41? Do you recommend a different cooler?

I will further investigate about the performance increase, it would probably help a lot. Should be +20% for Crysis and a bit less for Metro.

About the cooling it should be OK if you have the radiator as an intake. I am assuming you have the EVGA GTX 980 TI SC version with the ACX cooler, if you have the blower version (I doubt) then the radiator would be better as an exit to prevent hot air into the GPU. If you want you can post a picture of your rig I can help you with fan placement.

I would just try doing it, if you just want to try how it works out without many tweaking try a 4.2 multiplier with no need to touch the voltage settings. If you like it then you can keep on overclocking (manually setting voltage).

I actually haven't built my rig yet. I'm just still debating what kind of parts I need, and what benefits they hold.

So, you were saying that I shouldn't go for this one

But rather this one?

In fact, I might not even go with EVGA. If there are other cards with the GTX 980 TI chip, I might look into them if they are in the same price range. (600-700 dollars) If there is a better performer, then I might go with that one.

This is what I'm planning to build:

CPU: Intel Core i5 4690K @ 3.5 GHz stock (I'm going to overclock to 4.7 GHz)

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X31 or NZXT Kraken X41

Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition LGA 1150

Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury White 1866 MHz Modules (2x4GB)

Storage: 1 tb WD Black AND Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB

Video/Graphics Card: (I'm deciding this right now)

Case: NZXT S340 White Steel ATX Case

Power Supply: EVGA SuperNova 850W (I plan to SLI and overclock, so I'm adding a little more wattage to allow for that)

Wireless Network Adapter: GIGABYTE GC-WB867D-I

What graphics card should I use?

I have one question why did you choose a LGA 1150 (Haswell) Chip instead of a Skylake? I guess it is because price, but there is a rumor that next generation chips will also be on LGA 1151 so going for Skylake may be a wise choose if you plan on upgrading 2-3 years down the road.

Ok, about the GPU, yes I recommend going with open air cooler if you are looking for silence ad good GPU temps, the blower cooler instead is a good option in a case where you can not place good exhaust fans, but this is not the case. If you want to go for a reliable option I recommend the 980Ti MSI Gaming 6G, it has the best reviews and the most balanced specs out of the box.
I also personally like the Zotac Amp Omega and and Amp Extreme, but they require some tuning if you want good noise levels since they tend to want to keep the GPU under 55°C

I also watched HardwareCanucks review on the S340 to see what airflow options you have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cNWOgbEXMI

About the airflow:

So its pretty standard but you have options for a high mounted front radiator. This setup used a 120 or 140 radiator and a open air cooler like the EVGA ACX, the MSI 6G and the Zotac one.

This setup will provide the best balance between GPU and CPU temps but not very good motherboard temps so you should be sure to get a good motherboard (what you got there is good enough).
This will also provide good noise levels under load but if you want the best noise levels when on idle I would recommend a big tower cooler like the Cryorig H5 or R1 or the Noctua NH-D15S or NH-U14S (I like this since I don't game very often and I also like to leave things like games updating while I sleep sometimes).

Oh wait if you want a White and Black build then the MSI ARMOR 2X is selling a lot cheaper than others: http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GTX-OC-980TI-6GD5T/dp/B015DROXMU/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

If you want the absolute best deal then this MSI 980 Ti 6G LE is at 530 USD after a 30 USD mail in rebate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127895&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

Thank you so much. This answers all of my questions. Thanks for your time, and I will think about Skylake and an i7. Your answers are greatly appreciated!

I will be doing an entirely new build once the GTX 1080 comes out later this month. I'm going to wait until it comes out. It's gonna be great!

BTW, do you guys think the 1080 will be able to play games at 4k?
