i5 4590 and GTX 970 or i5 6600k and GTX 960 4GB for 1080p gaming?

Solution
Definitely get the 970/4590 solution. There is no game performance increase between Haswell and Skylake. And yes, I'm biased as a 4690K and SLI 970 owner :D. If you can find a 4690 for a decent price, it runs a little faster (200MHz).

Go for the first option but beware that the new line of GPUs from both AMD and NVIDIA will soon be released. I recommend waiting for 14nm/16nm... but it is up to you.

I will defenetly recommend you to wait for NVIDIA cards in June . You can always use your bultin CPU graphics for all essntial tasks . I think that the best option for you is to get i5 6600k and capable MOBO with DDR 4 ram . When in June you will decide wich graphics card you will need. Skylake platform will be more futureproof solution.

The gtx 970 is the perfect card for 1080p gaming. I can max out all games on Ultra at 60fps except for the Witcher 3 although I get a play-able 35-50 fps, sometimes 60 during cut scenes. I doubt there will be a card save for the gtx 1080 that will max out all games though. So I would recommend the gtx 970. Save money on your CPU and get a solid i5 that does't need overclocking. The i5 4460 is a good contender. It is a solid quad core CPU and will do the job for gaming if you don't need overclocking. It has a stock setting of 3.2 GHz and a solid 4 cores. It requires 85 watts of PSU and the gtx 970 requires 500 watts although it will use less. I would suggest a 600-650 watt PSU for extra head room although a 500-550 watt PSU from a good brand would do the trick. Hope this helps! :)
