hello people,

so i am not the most experienced when it comes to components and building machines myself, i have a rough idea of how things work, but that's where my expertise ends.

i have been gaming casually on a rather old machine for a while now, the thing seemed really cheap (around 600 bucks when i bought it) for the performance at the time, the specs are as follows :

i'm running windows 7 64-bit
the pc is a prebuilt HP machine - model id says "p6-2053de"
CPU : i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz (8CPUs)
RAM : 8GB
GPU : NVIDIA GeForce GT 530 (4gb)

i'm also using a rather small monitor (1280x1024, not ideal for gaming i admit, but i got it second hand for free, so that's what i'm using) but alot of newer stuff does run rather badly, and i'm looking to upgrade the problematic part, which i believe to be my graphics card, the budget is not minimal, but i'd rather stay below 500 bucks, could anyone be so kind as to give me advice on what to upgrade to with an explanation as to why that specific card ?

if any info is missing i apologize in advance, as i said i'm not super knowledgeable, so please just tell me what's missing and i'll ad the info.

thank you very much for the help, i appreciate it.

This is the exact specs of what you have:

You have a 300w power supply in there. If you don't want to change that I would recommend moving your GPU to to a GTX 750ti. It will work with your current PSU and doesn't require external power. It should be a good upgrade for you. That will play a lot of games on mid level settings at 1080p.

If you wanted to you could spend some money to get a good PSU replacement and move up to a GTX 960, thats about as high as I would go with such an old system.

If it was me, I wouldn't even go past a GTX 750Ti.
If you go down that route, I suggest the EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti SC:

The FTW Edition is slightly better but requires a 6-Pin power plug for it. If you have one then get that:

well thank you so much for helping so quickly, very much appreciated, and i apologize to the first poster for missing those two, won't happen again, my last concern would be size, the 750 is significantly higher than what i'm using right now, it also says "double-slot" on nvidias website under width (no idea what that means for me, again, kind of a newbie) so: will a 750 as bought in a store fit into my current setup or will i have to make some changes ?

It will fit, however it takes up 2 slots in the back of your PC. If you do not have any card in the slot next to your current GPU you are fine. If you do you will need to move that card down 1 slot further to fit this GPU.

thanks, will i have to fidle with anything else? i believe this is the second time ever that i'm meddling with any prebuilt machine, so i want to be sure, anything with the psu i have to make work somehow ? also excuse my lack of knowledge, but searching for 750TIs brings up several different looking cards, by asus for example, what do i have to pay attention to ?

You want to get one like this one that doesn't require external power
