so i have an old lenovo m58p 6138, with a mtq45mk mobo, and im going to be using the build as a gaming rig with a gtx 460, for light gaming on ark survival evolved, older cods (cod 4/5/6), and im wondering if there is any way of overcloking the cpu, as there is no settings in the bios to do so, and ive tried loads of programs which dont work aswell, im using a 3rd party cooler which is artic brand and i really wish i could overclock it, however, there is no where to do so, if i cant overclock it i will just buy a core 2 quad for the gaming as i might try gta 5 aswell!

No, you can't overclock on an OEM board. the BIOS are locked to prevent it.

GTA V is going to run like crap on a Core2 system. Even with a quad.

so even a core 2 quad q9550 would run shite? they are 2.8ghz with 4 cores, isnt that suffice?

Minimum requirements for GTA V are quite a bit lower than I expected but I've heard many people complain about performance with that game. It's time to get rid of Core 2 altogether though. It's been obsolete for the better part of 7 years now. A Skylake i3 will run circles around a Core2.

My old machine was a Q9550 until a year and a half ago when i upgraded to a FX8350. The Q9550 is a great CPU as far as Core2 goes. I Don't play GTA V but I do know when upgraded form a E6600 OC'ed to 3.2 to the Q9550 @ 3.2 I saw a HUGE difference on Crysis 3 on a GTX480. It is old. Core 2 are still good for Office machines, HTPCs, little kid PC's but for main stream Gaming and trying to really pump it out, as anort3 said. the new i3 will run circles around any Core2 even OCed.

Now it DOES support up to a Q9650 and i know Q9550's are pretty cheap used. If you can find one for cheap it MAY be worth it. The thing is it is a slower clock speed but it has more core but the thing is most games thrive on single core performance which the 8400 has a higher clock speed. so really the only way to either match or get better is the q9650. You might even be better off on getting the Anniversary edition of the Pentium and just Overclock that guy.

No that Pentium G 3528 was a good idea but in practice only having 2 cores 2 threads hurts it. We have at least one or two moderators who have played with them and they are disappointing when used for gaming. That little i3 6100 is a powerhouse though due to the high stock clocks and the Hyperthreading allows for much better gaming performance even though it's also a dual core chip.

^^^^^^^^ This even after overclocking they still are bad for a gaming chip for todays modern games unless your playing a very poorly coded game that can't use but like 1 & 1/2 cores. For AMD I would just pass for gaming right now I would take the i3 6100 over any AMD chip in the same price range.

well problem is, a new i3 and mobo is a good £150 min, whereas a q9550 is £40 used, and im wondering if its really that bad, its going to be used by my brother who will play ark survival evolved, rust, etc, was just seeing if gta would be possible aswell
