hello everyone, thanks for taking the time to check out my problem. i'll put down my specs, my problem and what I've done to try and remedy it.

case corsair vengeance c70

cpu- i7-6700k lga1151

motherboard- msi z170a xpower gaming titanium edition

ram- ddr4 2x16gb 32 gb 2666mhz. * I originally had installed both 16 gb ram in slots 2 and 4 per the motherboard instruction manual but only slot 4 was working. I took out the ram in slot 4 and left the one in slot 2 and it is working and being read. not sure what the problem is here.

video card- nitro radeon r9 390x

my problem is that with my gpu installed my motherboard cant read it, it's like there's nothing there.

what I have done.

I have pc connected to my tv so I can still have access to my other computer for internet and a working screen and what not. I read somewhere to hook it up to a computer monitor, I did that but no change.

I made sure both sets of pins from the power supply were plugged into the card itself. there is a little button on the side that lights up blue when pressed so I know the card is getting power.

I made sure the card was seated properly in its slot and not loose at all.

I made sure there was an hdmi cable running from the card to the tv.

I tried to update the drivers but since it thinks it doesn't exist it just updates the intel drivers.

I tried to go into BIOS to turn off the onboard graphics but cant find anything about graphics in there.

I pushed the clear CMOS button on the back and then windows wouldn't load. I had to reset the pc and now windows loads fine.

I uninstalled and deleted the intel graphics driver hoping it would seek out the new card, but it just installed a basic Microsoft driver just to be able to view.

I installed the video card from my working computer into the slot I was having an issue with and it worked just fine, I had picture and it showed up in BIOS. so I know my motherboard slot is working, which is a huge relief. the only thing I have left is that my gpu came DOA. any thoughts or comments are much appreciated

hi thanks for your reply. is that a fairly common thing? you can get a lemon just like with anything else I guess but is it common enough that people are like crossing their fingers hoping their card is good?

you have the monitor plugged into the video card and not the motherboard right?

sounds like it could also be a power issue

do you have a 650w or better power supply?

sorry about that guys, my power supply is evga supernova 850 g2 80 plus gold. @ maxalge yes I plugged into the video card and not the motherboard, every time I have tried the video card I have gotten nothing, straight no signal all the time, and have to change it to the motherboard just to be able to see and navigate. thanks for the replies guys.

hi, I'm wondering if I might have a power issue. the back of the gpu has slots for two 8 pin pci connections. the cables that came with my power supply are 6 pin connectors with a little 2 pin connector on the side. the 6 pin connectors fit, but the 2's don't. do I need to have all 16 pins going? if so, where do I get 8 pin connectors and why didn't my psu come with them in the first place? thanks for your time

dude, sir, thank you. that's absolutely right. I didn't think the 2's fit because one was a rounded one going into a square slot but I pushed them in with little resistance and now my gpu fans are spinning, I have picture via the hdmi cable and am now in the process of updating my drivers. I really cant thank you enough. you don't understand how this was stressing me out. my heart and blood pressure thank you as well. if you're ever around south texas shoot me an email and ill buy you a beer. thanks again. and thanks to everyone else who took the time to post or even just check to see what my problem was in the hopes of fixing it. good night and thank you.
