application causes explorer.exe to crash

Was recently asked to clear a laptop's hard drive.
Upon 30% completion, an unknown application caused the explorer to crash and there are no hotkeys on 8.1 as far as I'm aware (I'm a Linux fan)
Any pointers on how I could fix this? Thanks!

Fixed this by plugging in an USB, clicking on the prompt and launching a file explorer by doing this. From there, I went to the C: drive, performed a global search for explorer.exe, and launched it from there.

Probably didn't need to be this complicated, but it worked.
