I'm planning to buy a gtx 970, but there is so many brands. I was wondering if the brand makes a difference in performance.
example:

Also wondering what the different versions do for the msi one

Solution
I would say brand matters, but its not like you can choose a "wrong" brand.
Generally the only things that change brand to brand are warranty, build quality, cooling (and noise), and OCs.

I highly recommend the MSI Gaming, its a great card. Runs cool, quiet, and OCs well.
The first one is the one I recommend (The Twin Frozr V), the second is a blower style, the third is the armor 2x, the fourth is the same as the first, just green, and the last comes with a corsair water cooler.
It makes a small difference. They come at different clock rates. Compare those to sort out which is the faster. Read reviews for which are the most reliable, overclockable and so on. That said, their performance will be very similar.
The different MSI models come with different clock rates (levels of overclocking), different coolers, different color schemes and so on. I'm sure MSI's web site can explain the differences to you.

It matters in terms of after the fact, service and warranty. Performance wise they have slight differences due to different overclocking and heatsink designs. But for example EVGA is really good about warranty replacements, where some other guys may hassle you a bit. XFX for example used to have lifetime warranties on some cards. Thats really what to look for.
