Need to upgrade PC; Can I keep my old data?

I majorly messed up while cleaning my fan/heatsink and I now need to replace a bunch of parts.
I've got most of it figured out, but I have some questions on how to keep my data.

I broke a few pins on my CPU, so I'll be buying a new CPU (probably an I5 6500) and a new motherboard to go with it. Sadly, with my pc not booting right now I can't back anything up. So I was wondering if it is possible to make a clean windows install on a new SSD and to just plug in my old HDD afterwards.

Is this a workable approach or should I just rethink everything? Or do I need to accept that all my data is lost?

Thanks in advance!

Unless you somehow messed up your hard drive too, your data should be fine. Do just what you suggested: build your new PC, install windows, plug your old drive in, and your data should all be there.
