Anything better than a i7-4790K for gaming for under $500?

If you're simply wondering what the best gaming CPU you can get RIGHT NOW is, that would be the 6700k. The only thing better would be a 5930k/5960x, but that's only if you're going for a really high-end build with more than 2 GPUs as the 6700k is still going to be faster in most cases when using just two or 1 GPU.

i agree with the i5 6600k, had i done more research and kept my restraint on "OH ITS NEW AND THE "BEST", i would of not gotten my i7 6700k. best bang for your back and could of gotten better parts, mobo/psu/case ect

"Better" is subjective to your needs.
If you mostly game the 6600k is the best processor.
If you game and render/stream/edit on a regular basis then the 6700k (or a Xeon) are great choices.
If you tend to render more so than game, the 5820k would be a better option.

It wont necessairly get you more FPS. I said its a better processor for just gaming, not a faster processor.
Since the i5 is drastically cheaper than the i7, you can invest the money elsewhere in the system and make a much larger difference (GPU).
An i7 would be wasted, so an i7+960 would perform worse than the i5+970 for example.

this entire conversation has convinced me to take advantage of microcenters 15 day return policy.. i will be getting the i5 6600k from the i7 6700k..

More FPS primarily comes from the GPU. As long as the CPU is not weak, you want to put all your resources into a GPU.
