Windows 10 (Ent)
4 Gb RAM
Board Asus N3150M-E CPU Celeron 3150
HDD SSD 240Gb + 1Tb Toshiba
Stock Intel Graphic 1 monitor.

Whenever I connect my HD Backup (WD Elements 2Tb) via my USB3 port; the system start lagging from time to time (mouse pointer does not move for 2/3 seconds).
All board's drivers have been updated to the latest version.

Anyone ever experienced that?

Thanks.

I did check all connections; OK. I run the dlgdiag tool and got no error on a quick scan. I re-checked the drivers and were all (Including the UEFI) up to date.
But because I was in the UEFI setup I investigated deeper my options and saw an "xHCI enable/disable"
As it was "enabled" I set it to "Disabled" - Save and Restart. The system booted no problem.I use it now for a while ( > 1 hour) without experiencing any obvious problem.
I made a quick copy test and got a 50 ~ 54 Mb/s transfer speed; which is fine with the use I have.

Then tried un-plugging/replugging; starting with/without etc all seems OK now.

Therefore I assume that this xHCI...
Hi algis0762.

Sorry to hear about the issues you're having with your drive. :(
Do you hear any unusual sounds/noises coming from the it, or have experienced any other problems with it before that?

The good thing is that you've mentioned that this is a backup drive, so I assume you still have a copy of its files stored on a different location as well, but please correct me if I'm wrong, as the following instructions will be based on that.

So, I'd recommend that you try the drive with a different USB cables and a different computer, because this way you'd be able to determine if it's a faulty cable or USB port. If the drive still acts up like this, you could go ahead and download DLG (Data Lifeguard) and run both tests (Quick and Extended), to see if any errors or bad sectors pop-up. Here's how to do it: How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows.

Please let me know how everything goes.

I thought I posted a reply but obviously I missed something.

The WD Elements works fine, no strange noise or anything strange.
I just changed my board/cpu/ram and it worked fine in the previous configuration. Everything works as expected, except this lag (every 45/50 sec it'll freeze for 2/3 sec).
I have no other system at hand for testing but it is an idea. I honestly believe it is OS/RAM/USB3 related. I just copied 30 Gbs like a breeze. On USB2 tho it will only deliver at 1.5Mb/s.

More thinking :p

Every USB device connected will cause a 2 to 7 sec. delay in start up time. So what? Nothing is wrong. If start up time is somehow important disconnect all USB plugs and only plug em in when you need them. You will still have a device start up lag time when you decide to use them.

I know that when you plug an USB in, the system need to read it, thanks.
Fact is that USB device have to stay connected and it did works well in the previous config - Thus my question.

Can't help ya there. That sounds like a hardware problem. Maybe the port, maybe the drive or(?),. Different OSs can stress the system differently causing other symptoms. What happens if you plug the drive in after your guy is fully operational? Also equipment justs wears as well. One last thought. You don't exactly have the most powerful computer and you might just be overloading it as it lives it's life.

Hmm, if this is the case, you should make sure that there are no loose connections. Check if everything has been seated properly. Also, I know that you've written that all drivers are up to date, but check if your BIOS/UEFI has any updates available as well. The transfer speed depends a lot on the number of files, their size and your system among other things as well, but 1.5MB/s is low even for USB 2.0. If you have another external drive or if you can borrow one from a friend, you could try it out to see if the issue still persists.

Otherwise, I'd still recommend that you test the HDD, just to be on the safe side. And backup your data if you have done so already, as a precaution.

Please keep me posted.

Therefore I assume that this xHCI (which is a USB controller for USB 2/3) to be the trouble maker.
I will leave it "Disabled" for now and will investigate another time the why and how.
Meanwhile I consider the problem fixed and the case close :)

Thank you!
