Is something wrong with my CPU?

Hello,

My CPU began to heat up, to nearly 100C. I replaced the thermo paste, but the temperatures dropped only a bit. I tried playing CS:GO today, the temperatures of CPU were around 90C/194F and I had only ~120fps, where I normally have ~280fps even with that high temp.

I add readings from HWMonitor for both CPU and GPU if it would be relative somehow.

CPU stats ingame and shortly after

are any other readings besides the temperature abnormal? Is something else wrong or is it the fault of the high temperature?

I ordered different kind of thermo paste and a new case fan.
Nothing is overclocked.

Solution
The cpu will slow down if it reaches dangerous temperatures to protect itself.

If you are using the stock intel cooler, I suspect it is not mounted well.

At idle, your temperatures should be 10-15c. over ambient.
Nudge the cooler, if it wiggles, it is not mounted properly.

Here is my stock advice on that:
----------------how to mount the stock Intel cooler--------------

The stock Intel cooler can be tricky to install.
A poor installation will result in higher cpu temperatures.
If properly mounted, you should expect temperatures at idle to be 10-15c. over ambient.

To mount the Intel stock cooler properly, place the motherboard on top of the foam or cardboard backing that was packed with the motherboard.
The stock cooler will come...

What are you using to cool the processor? What kind of case and how many case fans do you have?

Yes that processor will begin thermal throttling around 90c.

Thermal paste (unless you totally did it astronomically wrong) isn't going to make that much of a difference.

I guess when you changed out the ppaste you cleaned out any dust clogged in the cooler ?

maybe your cooler fan is failing and not spinning up to meet the cooling needs ?? check how your coolers fan is doing with rpm's as the chip heats up [you did not add that part of your screenshots ] could just need a fan profile adjustment to increase the max rpm's at temp??

may just be one of them things with that game as well ??

just google CS:GO high temps and see...

To mount the Intel stock cooler properly, place the motherboard on top of the foam or cardboard backing that was packed with the motherboard.
The stock cooler will come with paste pre applied, it looks like three grey strips.
The 4 push pins should come in the proper position for installation, that is with the pins rotated in the opposite direction of the arrow,(clockwise)
and pulled up as far as they can go.
Take the time to play with the pushpin mechanism until you know how they work.

Orient the 4 pins so that they are exactly over the motherboard holes.
If one is out of place, you will damage the pins which are delicate.
Push down on a DIAGONAL pair of pins at the same time. Then the other pair.

When you push down on the top black pins, it expands the white plastic pins to fix the cooler in place.

If you do them one at a time, you will not get the cooler on straight.
Lastly, look at the back of the motherboard to verify that all 4 pins are equally through the motherboard, and that the cooler is on firmly.
This last step must be done, which is why the motherboard should be out of the case to do the job. Or you need a case with a opening that lets you see the pins.
It is possible to mount the cooler with the motherboard mounted in the case, but you can then never be certain that the push pins are inserted properly
unless you can verify that the pins are through the motherboard and locked.

If you should need to remove the cooler, turn the pins counter clockwise to unlock them.
You will need to clean off the old paste and reapply new if you ever take the cooler off.

A few weeks ago the temps were around 90C, but I had no fps drop. I have two case fans and stock CPU cooler.

Here is the insides. A bit messy, I know, but this alone can not be responsible for the temp, can it ?

I should have mentioned this before, but the low fps happens in every game I play now, even hearthstone.

Thank you for this information. Once my new thermo paste arrives, I will try to clean everything as much as I can and follow your steps in replacing it.

That doesn't look too bad, however with all of those plates missing from your slots you are likely losing airflow that should be headed towards your CPU. You should try and put those slot covers back in, tie up those cables with some zip ties, and then see what happens. Also clear out any dust.

Now as for how you mounted the cooler, I am assuming you put about a grain of rice worth of compound on the CPU (after cleaning EVERYTHING thoroughly) and then installed it and tightened it down without removing or moving it? If thats correct you are fine there.

Just curious, what is the refresh rate of your monitor?
