I could sell my current 780 and with the money I currently have I could afford a 970 and a 980 but is the 980 worth the extra money.

What fps would it run ark survival, Minecraft and just cause 3 on max settings.

Thanks!

Solution
IMO I don't think its worth it to upgrade to the 970/980 as the performance increase may not justify the extra cost, better off waiting for Pascal (Nvidia) or Polaris (AMD).

Please post your full systeqm spec oncluding PSU and wattage when asking this question. Your 780 is very near to a 970 in a high-end test system, the 980 would feel like an upgrade but not set the world alight.

Have you heard of computex? Have you seen any leaked images today?

Minecraft is a CPU intensive game and a GPU doesn't do much difference. Without shaders a GTX980 will have almost the same performance as a GTX660. The price difference is worth it, but I'd rather wait for Pascal if I were you, The 9xx series have very bad computing performance and they become a bottleneck when running on DX12. Yes, I know that these games don't use it, but still a GTX980 or 970 won't be so modern for long.

If you upgrade a graphics card, you want to make it a big jump or you will be disappointed if you do not see magic.

The GTX780 is in the same performance tier as a GTX970.
A GTX980 is only one tier higher.
Neither is a big jump.

If you are playing at 1080P, your GTX780 is about as good as you can do in most games.

If you are looking to upgrade to a 1440P or 4k monitor, then a GTX980ti class card would be appropriate.

I suspect any limitation is more likely to come from the cpu.

What are the make/model of the rest of your parts?

I think, at ~$550, the 980ti's are starting to be of better value:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-video-card-gtx980tigaming6ggoldenedition

Considering the new 1080's will be a bit faster than 980ti's, but also cost a bit more (anticipate going back close to $700 during the first several months after launch), then performance per dollar compared to a 980ti will be similar.

I guess it really depends on how long you want to wait and what to spend, but from a 780 I would 'at least' say go to a 980/Fury for a noticeable performance improvement, as others have suggested.

GTX9xx series didn't bring much difference in graphical performance itself, it brought two other things: 1.Significantly lower consumption, 2.A lot higher graphical prformance. So, today a GTX 780 and GTX 970 trully are a good choice for FullHd/1440p gaming, they won't be for long. Pascal with HBM is almost here. You should wait a bit more because the.first cards are already out.

It's the new GPU architecture...Yours is Kepler...the 9xx are mostly Maxwell and the latest one now will be Pascal (In June, shipping July)

The image I posted before was the leaked image of the new 1080 which will blow away most cards on the market right now and make the 970 and 980 prices drop (even more).

Wait till June/July friend!

Pascal is a new architecture that replaces Maxwell(9xx), it features HBM2 memory (A newer generation of the one seen on the FuryX) which is a lot faster and is stackable, meaning that the PCB of a high end card takes aproximately 19cm.

Pascal is the next generation of graphics cards from Nvidia. It is scheduled to launch in June.
Price/performance is unknown.
But it seems that GTX970, GTX980, and GTX980ti are no longer in production to clear out inventory.
You might find a good clearance sale in the next couple of months.
A 550w psu might not be enough for a GTX980ti card.

Your i5-4400 should be a very good cpu for anything.

Thanks, how much will the 1080s be??

If I cannot afford a 1080 the 980tis would go down in price so would the 980ti still be a good option

We are guessing...let's flip it...what are you willing to spend?

Expect an almost instant fall of 10% on 980s and 980Ti's...sometimes it ends up being more. If you can really stick it out this summer (I mean you have a 780 so these are really first world problems you are talking about), then black friday will be the time to pick up "throw out" GPU stock a la 970, 980, 980Ti and Titan X for absurdly low prices

If history holds true...Maxwell cards have already dropped in price in the last few months since November. Also when the 9xx series was released it caused prices to drop consistently for 7xx series cards.

So, if I wait and save my money then I should be able to get a 980ti or even a Titan X for $200 dollars less on black Friday once the Pascal gpus have come out?

Off their current price...seems highly likely.

Context: I got a 980Ti last Black Friday (in the UK and we don't even take it seriously here) for 50 GBP under market price...that is about $70 off when it was basically new.

I agree with the mindset that if you're going to upgrade your GPU make sure you get a noticeable performance improvement - with a 780 your gains with a 970 will probably not be noticeable and with a 980 maybe 15ish%, and if you're gaming at 1080 then you're already set anyway.

As others have said, with the new cards just around the corner if I was in your position I'd stick it out and see what's offered come June/July. This close to the end of the 9xx series it'd be tough to justify dropping the cash on a new one. I got my 980 about a month ago but I was coming from a gaming laptop with a 780m and it was on it's way out, so the difference for me is night and day. Part of the upgrade also included a 1440p monitor with gsync, so now I'm in gaming nirvana :)

I rarely agree with THG GFX card reviews as I don't care what a card does outta the box ... only interested in OC'd performance. However I do agree that unless you jump 3 tiers, you're not going to be wowed by the difference

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

I don’t recommend upgrading your graphics card unless the replacement card is at least three tiers higher. Otherwise, the upgrade is somewhat parallel, and you may not even notice a worthwhile difference.

Moving from a 780 to a 970 is not an significant upgrade with the 970 being only 15% faster. Your best bet at this time would be grabbing a 2nd 780 ... which will give you about a 70% boost. You may run into a game every now and then without an SLI profile but my experience has been that when that ha[p[pens, it's usually because you are getting 100 fps with a single card. You shud be able to find one for $150 - $225 and the pair will simply blow away a 980.

As for pascal ... I think we will see a paper launch in 2nd quarter but I don't expect the cards to be available in quantity till late 3rd quarter

um yeah go the 980 ti unless you are really good at installing waterblocks and extra better cooling on gpus the titan x is a waste of money as a overclocked 980 ti can beat it
