Hi, I'm new to the world of building a PC, my last 4 computers all have been laptops, the most recent one an Alienware 15 r1 and I was (well, currently) saving for a gtx 980ti rig but before that (because I'd build the PC sans the graphics card first) I was wondering which CPU to get since my current laptop has an i7 4710hq quad core but the new skylake 6700k is friggin' expensive!, well, at least compared to say an i5 6500k.

Would you recommend me to get the 6700k seeing where I'm coming from or would the i5 be ok?, also, since I'm not buying the graphics card until I sell my alienware through eBay I was also wondering if should I wait for the next graphics cards from Nvidia to be unveiled?, I ask because if I could wait a couple more months and get 980ti performance while also spending less on electricity and also maybe saving money would be great.

What GPU does your laptop have?

Reason I ask, is that AMD's Zen CPUs will be out Q4 this year. I plan to keep using my current rig until then, and it has just a 7970 and old i7-950. It's still running just fine though.

If you go with Skylake though, the model you get depends a lot on whether you plan to OC, and what type of CPU cooler you plan to get. The i5-6600 is only $40 more than a 6500, and would be easy to OC to the speed of the 6700 with just a $30 Hyper 212 cooler. Achieving a stable OC of that level on a 6500 might require something more elaborate, expensive, and bulky.

Keep in mind too, that while rad coolers can be more efficient, they're also harder to clean, and their fins are very delicate and vulnerable to damage.

I'd like to OC later on when I gain more experience but as of right now I'm not 100% sure about it becuase where I live the weather is really hot for about 7 months. The current gpu of my laptop is a 970m which is a Little behind a desktop 960 in terms of performance I think
