Has it always made that noise? I would say in general if a HDD wasn't making a noise then it suddenly starts making a noise it isn't good. I would back up any important data while it is still working.

It's made the noise for about 5 months, it never occurred in my old machine.

I would be wary of any HDD that makes noises it didn't make when you bought it. How much data is on it? If you can back it up then if it does break at least it won't be too bad.

That sounds like normal head seek noise to me. Maybe your old computer had a better insulated case, or the HDD mounts didn't transmit the noise as readily?

Does the HDD make the noise more when it's running a virus scan, less when you've left it idle for a while? Then it's probably just seek noise.

should i just backup what i need on my usb stick and just wait for it to die before replacing? I don't have a lot of stuff other than photos and game saves.

ive backed up my stuff. When you say monitor, do you mean look out for sudden clicking noise or use of smart test? I'll run malwarebytes scan to see if it gets louder. My case is a Define R5.

May be a bit weird, but I just bought a surge protector to replace my old powerstrip and my Hard drive doesnt make as much noise anymore. Is this related in any way?
