I am currently using an AMD FX-6300, an ASRock 980DE3/U3S3 motherboard, 2 x 4GB DDR3 Corsa Geil RAM and I'm running windows 10 (upgraded from windows 7). I plan to upgrade to an intel 6700K which will mean changing my motherboard and RAM as well because AMD and intel sockets are not cross compatible and the intel skylake processors only support DDR4 memory. I know I will have to reinstall Windows 10 and register it again, however, because I upgraded from Windows 7, I don't have a physical copy of windows 10, so how would I obtain this without having to purchase another Operating System? Also due to having upgraded from windows 7, I no longer have a windows key to register the OS when it has been reinstalled, so how would I register my copy of Windows after this upgrade?

Solution
if this old pc was a dell or hp that was pre installed os. you have to buy a copy of windows 10 for the new mb. if it a pc you build and lost the cd and windows key. then you can download windows 10 using the windows media creation tool. when it ask for a oem code click skip. when you get into windows and it says not registered. you have to contact ms see if they register the new mb. (lot people say there old mb died). you wont be able to ue rhe pc with the amd mb intll you get a new copy of windows when ms moves the key to the new hardware.

Thanks, much appreciated. I built the PC myself, so I should be able to upgrade it without having to purchase another copy of windows.

I've read about people upgrading their motherboards and CPUs and being able to keep their copy of windows. The threads I've read mainly say that they needed to reactivate windows or contact microsoft in order to keep the OS.
