I need a great portable computer that can handle high end games and strong edditing software. Its just so I can have something on the go and when I'm not Home. I am saving up for a tower but a laptop may come far more in handy. What are your thought on what brands and specs I should be looking for in a good laptop

if you want the best performance, i would just save up for a tower and use that for your main work. if you need a portable i would get something cheap which works on the go for you for basic tasks. in terms of total performance a laptop (even if it says it has the same specs as a desktop) is going to be worse off since mobile is more geared towards power savings. for example a gtx980 and a gtx980m are going to be far different on performance. similarly processors are also the same as they are often clocked lower (for heat and power) with worse performance than a desktop.

if you absolutely still want a laptop for on the go use and are aware of the limitations but still need something powerful then i7 models with a good graphics card...

if you absolutely still want a laptop for on the go use and are aware of the limitations but still need something powerful then i7 models with a good graphics card such as the larger ROG models from asus might be a good choice. while i'm not very familiar with the newer models we had a g75 for a time and it was quite nice. lenovo also makes some decent designs. perhaps acer products like the predator.

for around your budget you should be able to get something with an i7, gtx960m or gtx970m, 8, 12 or 16gb of ram. it would be great if you had a ssd as this would speed it up but that may push it over budget (you can upgrade later to one). the older g75 that we had at the time ran an i7/960 combination and would handle most games at good settings so as far as performance as long as you are not unreasonable a gaming laptop should be a good enough solution.

once you get a desktop though its hard to say you will use the laptop much unless on the go.

of course this is just my opinion from having experienced both and you are free to do what you will.
