AMD phenom II X4 955 for gtx 950?

hi,so im looking to upgrade to a new GPU soon which is the GTX 950,i was wondering if my Current CPU (Phenom II X4 955) is good enough for the gtx 950,or do i need to upgrade my cpu also?

My friend runs the x4 940 which is a slightly less powerfull CPU with a HD 7870 which is a lot older but of similar quality to a GTX 950 and they run well together.

im kinda new to the whole overclocking thing and im kinda scared that it might damage my computer permanently,is it really safe?
