Where is my hard drive space?

I have Windows 10 pro with about 4 different drives of various brands and size. One in particular is a 1TB toshiba hard drive. I use it as a dedicated windows image back up and there are only two folders in the root of the drive, one folder for image backup and I recently put a virtual machine folder in there with a 50gb virtual hard drive. The problem I am having is that windows recognizes the drive as 1TB and says the max capacity is 931gb, but I have only used about 400gb and it is saying I only have 200gb left. Where did the rest of the space go? Both files in the root list their quotas and one is 350gb and the other is 50gb. So I am justing wondering what happened to my space.

Another piece of information is when I started my computer up this morning, it showed as that drive wasn't recognized, in file explorer or disk management. The disk never showed up. After a reboot, that still didn't cause the disk to show up. After going into the bios and making sure the bios saw it, I booted up and it saw the disk just fine. I don't know if this has anything to do with the issue I described above.

Thankyou

Hard drive manufacturers quantify their storage space in decimal units while Windows uses binary units.

1,000,000,000,000 decimal bytes / 1,073,741,824 binary bytes = 931.322574615478515625

Converting your 1 TB HDD from decimal to binary gives you 931 GB after rounding. Both numbers are correct.

Can't say where your space has gone. Have you turned on, "Show hidden files, folders, and drives," in File Explorer? You might also check in Disk Management to see how the hard drive space is allocated on that drive.

If the drive is an SSD, it may need a firmware update to address reliability issues.

Either way, if the drive connects via SATA cable, it could have a flaky, failing SATA cable, or just a loose connection

I should have known it was system restore. I did some looking up and even though I had system restore set for 250gb on that drive, it wasn't configured and my boot drive wouldn't store the system restore files on the other drive. So I have set it up for my boot drive at 10gb and there is only one restore point and so far the max spaced being used is 873mb of the 10gb for system restore. Do you think 10gb would be ok for system restore of my boot drive. It is only a 500gb ssd.
