I have to ask. I'm being called by a company that sells 'System Mechanic.' Yes, yes, I know, I know...

Anyway he claims that ALL Microsoft Services should be running ALWAYS, and to shut one or more off, it has to be done manually by a nefarious way; ie: virus, malware, etc.

Rubbish, right?? Certain services are on or off depending on what's needed at the time?

Thank you

Solution
yup total nonsense. some turn on at boot-up, others when needed.

you can manually turn on and off services easily by simply going to the services menu and doing it yourself. type services into the run command and it'll take you there.

i turn a lot of them off for my pc and know what i can and can't turn off to keep windows from running.

They're lying. You only need services for things you need to run - there are some that do need to be running all the time, but many can safely be shut off. Here's where I go to determine what services I can shut off(not needed)

That's what I figured.

Normally I can smell a scam a mile away, but this particular far-easter was really quite smooth and articulate- not like most of those bone-heads. Scary.

Thanks everybody!
