Tried both my gpus in the x16 slot and they both work, however when I try both in the x8 none of them work, does this sound like a broken pcie slot? Wasted money on another 970 if it is

Well an MSI Z87-G55 should support SLI, but only in the top two x16 slots. If you have any other expansion cards plugged in you might have run out of lanes. Check the motherboard manual for the limitations. It may be necessary to disable some onboard peripherals as well.

No other add in cards? Try turning off onboard peripherals? Do you actively use the USB 3.0?

I looked through the manual and there isn't much to tell, you only have one config option for SLI so the lowest slot can't be used, maximum on that is 4x mode. SLI requires 8x.

I'm not actually showing a single card installation supported in the second slot, it may only route lanes there if there are two cards present.

i have tried both my 970s alone in the second slot, i just get no signal, both tried in the top slot, work fine.

bottom slot, everything works but the gpu as it doesnt fit.

i had my sound card in the second slot a few weeks ago and it worked, now nothing works in it.

if i have my gpu in the top slot and try everything in the second slot, they all get power, but the slot doesnt recognise any of them and it says the slots empty.

Not the funnest thing to do, but have you tried wiping or updating the BIOS? I'm curious if it isn't storing some sort of profile for the sound card you had in there and not giving enough lanes to the GPU (though I'm pretty sure a GPU will at least show up even in a 1x/4x slot)

The 970s certainly came out after the Z87 chipset and it could just be an incompatibility.

When I dropped a GTX980 into my Hero VI I preemptively updated the BIOS while I had my GTX580 in there. Didn't have problems with the second one a few months later.
