Hey Guys,

I am at my wits end. I can't for the life of me figure this problem out. I've done some searches here as well as watched some videos online and tried their remedies with no avail. I really hope you all can shed some light on this.

Specs:

Mobo: Gigabyte z170n-gaming 5
CPU: i7-6700k 4.0ghz
PSU- SFX-600w gold
Ram:Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM
GPU- EVGA gtx 960 FTW
2-Samsung 850 evo ssd's
1-slim cd drive
Case-SilverStone RVZ02
Windows 10 64 bit(upgrade through 7 64bit)

Problem:
I can post and boot into Windows, when I leave the GPU unplugged and out of the case. Using the integrated graphics, everything seems to function normally. I was able to install steam and all of my games. Get all the updates out of the way and overall configure Windows the way I want it. When I install the 670 and power the machine on I can post and get to the Windows loading splash. Sometimes it will go through to the desktop and other times it will just rest the PC and leave me with a black screen. With Windows 7 I was having the same issues.

On the times I am able boot into Windows, it doesn't last more than a few minutes before the screen freezes and all I can do is a hard reset. I have tried updating the nvidia drivers, but anytime I attempt that, it barely starts installing and the screen goes dark. I've attempted deleting all the drivers with the display driver uninstaller. Also I have tried diasbling IGPU in bios as well as disabling the Intel display adapter in Device manager.

I've fresh installed Windows 7

I've fresh installed Windows 7 with an update to windows 10.

I've rma the motherboard in case of bad pcie slot

I've tried with one stick of ram, then swapped to the other and tried.

There seems to be no way of installing the nvidia driver without having the GPU plugged in because it performes a search for compatable hardware prior to the installation.

Graphics card was working in my last build. I don't have my old build with me currently to rule out GPU, but since it will boot sometimes I figure it's possible it is not the problem.

I really just want to finish this build and get back to enjoying my computer. This has really sapped the fun out of building this PC. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really would appreciate your help in helping me get this thing up and running correctly.

Thanks guys!

Theunliked,

I am using the updated version of that software to remove the drivers. You are correct, I am able to remove all previous versions of drivers. My problem lies in trying to install another version of the nvidia driver.

Also, this is a fresh build for me, minus the 670 graphics card. So it hasn't worked yet.

Thanks!

Followed the Ubuntu advice and installed that along side Windows 10. Was able to boot into Ubuntu with the GPU installed. Then downloaded and installed nvidia driver. Once selected, poof same problem as on the Windows side, so it is looking to be a driver issue. I am not completely savy with Ubuntu so I am going to reinstall one last time and really go slow through what I select for graphics settings. Although, it's starting to point to driver issues........so what's next for the Windows side then?
