Problem with connecting 14pin pci-e to a 12 pin gpu

Hello there, I had an xfx r9 280 gpu and it dies 2 days ago and it had 2x 6pin + a attachment of 2 pins on one of the 6pins pci-e connectors
Now until I buy a new one I pulled out an old gpu that has only 2x 6pin pci-e connectors and I dont know how to connect it.
I tried connecting the 2 main pci-e connectors with the attachemnt of 2 pins just hanging out (not using it)
Powered up pc, and it didnt work.

There is no need to chceck psu cpu or ram couse everything is nearly new and its a very good rig.

But I want to know, isn't it working because the 2pin is not connected or because the gpu isnt working and how can I check that.

have you tried using a different plug, you have 2 6pin and 2 6+2 pins coming from the PSU. Make sure your using two different plugs from different cables. If the cable has a 6 and 6+2 pin on it dont use both of them use a 6 pin from both cables.

The problem is that the pcie slot is ok. It works with a 3rd gpu. But that gpu didnt have molex connectors tho.

I just need to know if I am connecting everything fine and if the 2 pins sticking out of the 2nd 6pin molex can be left out.

Motherboard is as rock z87 pro3
There are 2 more slots...but not express

This is the way to do it. First of all, i would remove the gpu and attach my monitor to integrated graphics just to see that everything else is fine. Then, i would check all the cables, and connect the gpu. if still nothing, the second gpu is dead aswell.
