Very high temperatures for both CPU and GPU

I've noticed that both my CPU and GPU tend to heat up a lot over the past few days. My build is roughly three years old, and I've not had this problem before.

My CPU is a Core i5 3470 and graphics card is a Gigabyte Radeon HD 7790 1GB version. I haven't overclocked either of them, but my CPU temperatures hover around the 45-55 mark, and the GPU around 40 degrees. This is while idling, by the way.

When I play something, like Assassin's Creed Unity, the CPU shoots up to 70 degrees, and the GPU goes off the charts to over 90 degrees.

Could someone please tell me what's wrong? Are both of them going to die soon?

Thanks in advance.

Have you even bothered yet to open the case and inspect it inside for any dust? Dust really cause high temperatures when they pack on the fins of the heatsink. Any PC older than 3 years that has never been cleaned can expect as much as 20C increase in temps from that.
There's nothing inherent;ly wrong with 70C on a CPU but to determine whether it's high or low, it needs to be compared when under a known load. Would suggest running RoG Real Bench (application based benchmark / stress test) while monitoring core temps with HWiNFO 9run sensors only).

As for GPU, the temp shuld run < 60C. Again to compare with other units, Furmark is the tool generally used

1. Check and make sure that all your case fans are running, and at adequate rpms.
2. Figure on one 140mm fan for every 100 watts of power being used
3. Check CPU cooler and GPU cooler for dust, air cans or air compressors work ....suggest holding finger on fan blades when applying to fans.
4. Check CPU cooler and make sure that it hasn't loosened

If none of the above apply, it may be time to apply new TIM and remount.

What were the temps before, idle seems high but 70 in game isn't bad... As for the dust depends how much your temps went up by...

While playing AC Unity, graphics card temperatures shot into the 90s, and while playing Europa Universalis IV (with a couple of mods) it went about 100 degrees. Surely that's not right?

80-90c is safe for AMD's recent GPUs. The higher-end ones run that temperature with the cooler AMD provided with them. However, 100c is bordering on unsafe and sounds higher than I would expect for an HD7790. As others have suggested, you might want to pull the card out and blow off any accumulated dust. If that doesn't help, adjusting your fan speed profile, or applying fresh thermal paste can help.

70c is normal, safe and expected for an Intel CPU under the stock cooler.
