GTX 960 worth buying now.

Hey guys,

So I am in a bit of a dilemma. I wanted to buy the GTX 960, and I ordered it too, until my friend urged me to cancel it because of the GTX 1xxx Pascal series launching this year.

Now I have cancelled my order , and decided to wait it out, but I just realised even though the pascal is scheduled to release around September 2016, the GTX 1060 [The alternative for the GTX 960] may release somewhere in JAN 2017, just like the GTX 960 did, and waiting till JAN is way too long.

Basically , I have my summer break right now and I wanted to upgrade to play in the summers after which I will be taking my PC to wherever I'm gonna be pursuing my higher education. Waiting for the pascal will also mean that I will have to upgrade it during my college which i will be attending far from home [Which won't be a problem, but i may not have time due to college]

Now here are a few questions I ask:

1.Will the GTX 960 future proof me for the next 2 years? As in will i be able to play future releases at least at 1440*900 @high settings @approx 40-60 fps? [Yeah, i do not have a 1080p monitor for now and game in 900p resolution. I may however buy a 1080p monitor in the future, pretty unsure tho]

2.The DX12 has got me a little scared. Current hardware is a little unfit for DX12 from what i heard. So will the release of the GTX1xxx cards and DX 12 mean that the game devs & drivers will concentrate on DX12 which will leave us users of the GTX9xx series in the dust ? Basically this would mean a HUGE degrade in performance,

I'm opting for the GTX 960 ASUS Strix 4Gb edition, and I do not want this to be a dead investment.
Awaiting your answers so i can make my decision :)

PS:Buying a GTX 970 or a 980 is completely out of the option due to budget constraints and the GTX 960 PERFECTLY fits my budget.Also, i'm currently using a GTX 650 ASUS e-1GB edition.

dont worry about DX12, pascal nor polaris will have 110% dx12 support since the architechture for those GPUS was both in progress when DX12 was around teh corner, so tehy coudlnt implement it properly in teh next gen gpu either, will prob first truly see 100% dx12 cards with Volta/Vega

Futureproof, no 960 is by no means future proof, it can struggle at 1080p in titles even now
and setting a fixed fps goal makes it even harder, you WILL have to downgrade gfx a fair bit to achieve aid goal in some titles

and you are totally correct about the wait time, since 960 is in teh lower end of the spectrum its so very likely it will release much much later, making the wait worse
no gpu right now will be totally future proof for 2 years,, wwe...

buy for what you need/want right now, since the next release will be 1070/1080, can you wait/afford that higher price point/jumping up from 960 to 970 when/if it drops on pascal release? then it will last you a bit more

other wise, accept the limitations of 960 and get it now for your "Needs"

I didn't really get you.
You mean every year Nvidia promises a 40% performance and the real time results show only a 10% increase?

Also, won't DX12 pose a threat to the GTX 9xx series?
Also rumors say its coming out in September.

yes it is.. reviewers are confirmed to get their hands on tehm in may, and thus rlease should be expected to follow in a couple of months after,
but i agree on teh "buy 960 now if need now" part

Answered quite a lot of my queries.
Alright if thats the case, then i guess i will go for the GTX 960.

And no, I wouldn't mind playing games at high-medium also as log as i get 35+ FPS depending upon the game. Again, at 1440*900 res.

Yeah I've researched that. But the availability of the r9 380 in my country seems a little limited.PLus , I'm not able to find the ASUS version cause that the only brand with the service center in my area. Also, There doesnt seem to be much of a FPS differnece although the 380 seems to have more RAW power.

Having bad experiences with AMD in the past and a smooth experience with Nvidia, i think i would go for the GTX 960 :)
(Yeah Ik im being a fanboy here :p)

also, always bear in mind the difference in power consumption between cards, 2 cards might be almost identical in performance, but if 1 card needs more power than teh other and you dont have the sufficient hardware to supply that, then your choices also gets made more easier for you

Well, to start off GTX 960 SSC EVGA, 4Gb. It was 250 when on sale, It currently has hit 300, I ended up purchasing one beginning of 2016, it was more then worth it, Battlefield games are easy, lowest FPS on ultra is 45, I mainly hit 60 though, 90 max. The times I dip into the 40's is when shanghai siege tower falls. Mirrors edge catalyst. This is a pretty tough title for the GTX 960 SSC EVGA 4gb ACX 2.0+, Yet I have hit 35 lowest FPS while moving through the highest points really fast or in very fast fighting of about 10 AI. Highest is 78 FPS, Average is around 42-52. At the current time I'd just wait for the GTX 1060 to come instock.
