I have an Alienware x51 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 but my display is apparently controlled by Intel HD Graphics Control Panel which keeps crashing and fixing itself. When it happens I lose what I am doing in Firefox and have to start over. Is it normal that Intel Graphics is in control? If I click on Nividia control panel it says I am not connected to Nvidia GPU but GE Force experience opens fine. I have no idea what is going on. All this since Windows 10 of course

Help?

No that is not normal. Your motherboard should disable the onboard Intel graphics from the CPU automatically when a dedicated graphics card is installed. At least that's the way it works with most motherboard OEM makers. I'm not familiar with what Dell uses in their Alienware machines. Have you gone into the BIOS setup and see if there's an option to validate and change the on-board graphics setting?

Is your monitor connected to the GTX GPU or an on-board video connector? Check this first.

Most motherboards allow you to enable both iGPU and dedicated GPU at the same time, but if you don't have a monitor hooked up to the dedicated GPU, obviously there is nothing for it to do.

Not true. It's one or the other, not both at the same time. There may be *some* motherboards that allow it, but I've never come across it in many builds since the Core 2 days of onboard graphics and aftermarket motherboard makers (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, and ASRock specifically).

This is way over my head. I know Intel is controlling my screen but I have nvidia drivers installed. I don't know what to do. I hate to go back to windows 7

I just looked up the manual for that machine ( https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=5&ved=0ahUKEwj8k-nhxqDMAhUMTCYKHaUqDuAQFghFMAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fpdfstream.manualsonline.com%2F6%2F649547bd-0916-4c60-a47b-36eedba6c02b.pdf&usg=AFQjCNEgbKRl1O00wVbzNtTGw8DiBbV0Dg&sig2=_J2YbdBAfgzLRRRN41-PUg&cad=rja ).

It appears there is no option to enable/disable the onboard graphics in the BIOS setup screen (hitting F2 when you see the Dell splash logo during bootup...you should see it advising you in the lower corner to hit F2 to enter the setup screen). These are all the options it gives for onboard devices:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Advanced — Integrated Devices

USB Controller
Allows you to enable or disable the integrated USB controller.

HD Audio
Allows you to enable or disable the integrated audio controller.

Onboard LAN Controller
Allows you to enable or disable the onboard LAN controller.

Launch PXE OpROM
Allows you to enable or disable the boot option for legacy network devices.

PCH SATA Configuration SATA Mode
Displays the SATA mode.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You may need to check with Dell Support. Did that PC come with that GTX 670 or did you add it later?

^^Did you verify that your machine is fully Win10 upgradeable before doing it? I've heard people doing it with older rigs and being screwed because the onboard graphics or video card wasn't marked as not compatible with Win10.

According to Dell my device and gpu are windows 10 compatible. My computer came with the card in it. Iwill call but they always want to take over my ckmputer and twice utterly screwed it up

Get on their support forums and ask. Maybe some forum member there can help without Dell sniffing around and jacking up your PC. This requires more Dell expertise. I use HP support forums all the time for my laptop help needs. They have friendly HP reps and expert non-HP volunteers that are happy to give advice and help without being intrusive like a customer support dial-in. I assume Dell has something similar.

I'm running a monitor on a gtx 780 ti and a 2nd monitor on iGPU. It's not uncommon at all since CPUs with integrated graphics have been around. Plus, with DX12 multi-GPU support, you'll be able to mix and match with iGPU to improve performance, so might as well get used to dGPU and iGPU enabled setups, my friend.

At any rate, if the monitor is hooked up to the Gtx and there is video on the monitor, clearly, the Gtx is "somewhat" operational. Probably need to do a clean install of nvidia drivers.

I called Dell and got the answer and some of you had it too...but I didn't know what to do with the info you gave.
My monitor is run by HDMI. Being a dense individual I foolishly connected to the port on the back of my Alienware that SAID "HDMI". Well my friends that port connects to Intel chipset.

I knew I hit the lottery when my Dell rep was American and had no accent so I could understand her clearly. She never asked to take over my computer. HUGE PLUS. She had me check my settings and drivers and everything was correct. Next she looked up the diagram of my specific system with MY card and as was suggested it has its OWN HDMI on the very bottom of the back panel and is unmarked. I merely unplugged from the top HDMI port, connected to the bottom one (direct to GPU card) and the Intel Display settings on the taskbar disappeared leaving only the Nvidia GE Force Experience. I hit Nvidia control panel and it opened right up and now I can customize 3D in programs etc. SUCCESS!

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions c4s2k3 but I just didn't know HOW to connect my GPU to my screen. Had I installed the card myself I would have known those were the inputs. Since I got it custom from Dell I assumed the obvious HDMI port on the top was the right one - especially since it was the once the directions said to use!

Anyway I am all set now...and for once it was not Windows 10 fault. It was mine
