Tracking location or printer source?

If you print a piece of paper to a printer connected to a network, can someone tell exactly what device its from, or how hard would it be to track?

Its an odd question but a friend of mine printed a ton of edgy papers to the wrong printer at school. He was using on of the hundreds of small laptops that our school has. The printer was connected to the same network.

Not sure if this is the place to ask but thank you in advance.

It depends on how the printer is setup. Most network printers can tell you what user is printing the job or the system that the job is printing from.

A mo9dern school setup would have that ability to see as it is printing.

As for tracking after the fact, it again depends on the printer itself and if that printer is able to store the jobs. Most big copiers can store job information, mainly for troubleshooting.

I would also assume the school has a log in based on each person but if someone here prints out a document I can see their user name.
