Hey guys! I just got gifted by a friend his old gaming PC, and I was shocked to see he had a Asus m5a88v evo MoBo with a FX 4300 and a CM Hyper N620 cooler. I currently own an i5 3470 with ASrock h61m vg3 MoBo. If I overclock the FX past 4.5 GHz, how much difference in performance is there between both CPU? Thanks!

We'll just use the single thread score:

1908/1412 = approx 1.35x

Thus the FX-4300 would have to be overclocked 135% to match the i5-3470.

*So you'd have to overclock to about 5.4GHz.

(The amount of gain in a game would vary though. Some would have minimal CPU bottleneck thus not gain much. Gaining over 30% from stock 4GHz would be the best-case scenario assuming a very CPU bottlenecked situation normally.)

The difference above 4.5GHz is probably not worth discussing since even if you managed 4.8GHz you'd only gain up to about a 6% difference in heavily CPU bottlenecked games. Because 4.8/4.5 =...

(If you want the performance diff between the FX-4350 at 4.5GHz and the i5-3470 do the math yourself. Basically it would be (i5-3470)/(FX at 4.5GHz)/(4/4.5)
