Hey, ive been looking on z170 chipset gigabyte motherboards. If you look for example at this motherboards specs: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5498#sp

it says: Support for DDR4 3466(O.C.) /3400(O.C.) /3333(O.C.) /3300(O.C.) /3200(O.C.) /3000(O.C.) /2800(O.C.) /2666(O.C.) /2400(O.C.) /2133 MHz memory modules

does that mean it only supports 2133 mhz and you have to overclock it for higher mhz?? what will happen if i put a 3466mhz stick into it? I honestly dont understand

Solution
For memory whose rated speed is an overclocked speed (>2133 MHz), "overclock" basically means "enable XMP profile" (which is sort of an automatic form of overclocking). It's basically one setting you change in the BIOS. Sometimes you may need to do some additional tweaking for the XMP profile to work, typically on really high speed kits. There's also manual RAM overclocking, which in theory can be done on any RAM of any speed (at least with the right mobo) with varying success.

so is there any point in getting ram fastr than 2133mhz?? is it better to overclock a 2133 ram stick to 2400, or get a 2400 and overclock it so that it actually runs at 2400?

So if buy a 2400 mhz CL10 ram and simpy enable XMP profile, i will get exactly those specs without risking of breaking my warranty or pc? The reason i want 2400 mhz is because i can buy one for the same price as a 2133 mhz cl13 costs

The thing is that all 2133 mhz with low latencys cost a lot where i live for some reason. I can buy a 2400 mhz cl 10 ram for the same price as a 2133 mhz cl 13, which is obviously worse
