Really weird issue with GPU recognition... I have been through the grinder seeking a solution.

Full story.

3 weeks ago my old pc:

i5-2500k
780 ti
8gb
850w psu
asrock extreme 3 gen 3
windows 10 fresh install

Started having gpu recognition problems... Screen would go black and I would receive "no signal". After rebooting it still wouldn't work. I finally got it to work by switching pcie slots. THe bios then recognized the 780 ti again...

I assumed it was either a PSU issue or a MOBO issue.. I should mention lower end cards without dedicated power are recognized fine by the mobo on the same slot. So I decided to upgrade my pc and in doing so try an fix my issue. I bought all new stuff.

New PC:

Asus 1151 mobo
i7-6700k
32gb ddr4
780 ti
Same 850w psu.
New hdd and ssd.

I have had this new configuration for about a week or two and my mobo suddenly doesn't recognize the card again... Today I went out and bought a new PSU from best buy and swapped out my old one... No difference.. The mobo still does not recognize the card but will recognize a bus powered card... I decided t switch PCIE slots and low and behold the mobo recognizes my card again...

Does anybody have any thoughts or ideas on what's happening... I am at a loss as to what I should do.. PS the PC does boot when the card is not recognized.

Solution
1) Not a PSU issue.
Proof? You switched PCIe slots then it worked.

Also, not much power needed on bootup so it's unlikely since it works with other cards.

2) Motherboard issue?
Possibly.
Since it worked on the other PCIe slot doesn't that rule out both the power supply AND the graphics card as being the problem?

However, if other GPU's are working without fail it rules this out.

3) GPU usage?
I'd say we'd ruled that out except that problems are sometimes INTERMITTENT so it may have stopped working then when you switched PCIe slots it worked again.

So... what?

*I'd say it's an issue with the graphics card. Your troubleshooting may be complicated by intermittent failure/working but if a PCIe slot works fine with a different GPU 5X...

Or a faulty PSU killing PCIE Slots? I don't know but I am trying to determine what to replace. If the card works fine after switching pcie slots then what would be the issue with the card..

Why then would it work on another pcie for weeks then die and no longer be able to be used on the used slot. Ty btw this response is loads better than the first.

P.S.
If it was a HDMI lead would the Mobo not still recognize that the slot was being occupied?

Yeah sorry, I was trying not to be sarcastic, difficult, it's 3am here in the UK, I'm working a night shift and tired! But essentially what you wrote in your original post was:

"When I have my 780Ti installed in a PC that PC exhibits weird behaviour, when I replace my 780Ti with another graphics card the problems all go away, "

ergo faulty 780Ti.

Why then would it work on another pcie for weeks then die and no longer be able to be used on the used slot.

Because PCs are weird. I've seen a lot of behaviour at least this odd with no reasonable explanation (not being sarcastic here at all!).

Assuming your GPU is still under warranty I'd be thinking about RMAing it for a repair/replacement, that's where I would start anyway.

Thank you for the thought out response. Ya, I agree I am just trying to reaaaaaaallly make sure its the GPU before I blow $700... The thing that is killing me right now is that I can 100% of the time plug the gpu into another slot and it will always work. It may take a few days to die again but if I plug it into another slot after the second time it will of course work once again.

I'd think about using SLI too.. Your fickle computer might like that better and fix it's self!

Interesting idea. Thanks

You're welcome!
Yeah.. Get a same model GPU and try SLI..
And if anything.. You will have a new card that works and NOW an RMA for the old one! Just kidding..
