Who's better in gaming? A i3 540 or an FX 6100. The i3 has significally better single core performance but really suffers in multicore

Solution
nah i3 540 way better & the 1156 socket boards can be tweaked for more power where the fx are way behind i have an i3540 in a kids budget desktop on a paliat 260gtx & can handle most games no issues 2nd hand it eats fc or any amd online run @ least 8gig ram & u be able to play most games out

Both of them are "past time technologies". What is the reason you are asking about them, Do you have an MB for either one or what ?
That i3 540 may have small single core performance advantage but FX 63xx would have substantial multi core performance.

stop lying to yourself, them old intel cpus are nowhere near as good as the new ones, especially not the i3s.

Eh. Tough call.

I'd probably keep the FX, despite the i3 probably offering more performance in a lot of games, because socket AM3+ is newer than socket 1156. 1156 is around 8 years old and stopped seeing new designs in maybe 2010, whereas AM3+ as received new CPU designs as recently as 2012.

On the other hand, you can drop in an i7 8xx into an 1156 socket, which will be faster in games than any AMD CPU, period.
