Just built this new PC:

CPU: Intel Core i7 6700 3.4Ghz 8MB Cache
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX960 4GB GDDR5
PSU: FSP Aurum 650W 80Plus Gold
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-H170-D3HP
RAM: Kingston HyperX DDR4 (2x4GB) 2666mhz C15
COOLER: Cooler master Nepton 240M

Im playing csgo at high settings 1920x1080 and my CPU is running at 30 degrees C for an hour or so, a bit later it starts running at 80-90 and im getting frame drops.

I recently reseated my cpu for troubleshooting could the thermal paste need replacing or something?

Solution
It seems that you did not replace the thermal paste properly. Clean them with isopropyl alcohol, reapply an new layer (pea size, line method will do) and make sure all 4 of the screws are tight.

My guess is your are using the stock intel cooler and if thats the case than mostly likely one for the four pegs popped up so the cooler is no long making full contact. Either way I would check your fan settings to make sure its spinning up to full speed under load and not on a quite mode or something. Couldn't hurt to pull the cooler off and redo the paste and reset it if it comes to it.

hmm well other than being in a quite mode setting or something like bad airflow you might want to reseat the cooler. I expect 80-90c from a stock intel cooler but that high on stock setting with a aftermarket cooler.

Thermalpaste is good for years once applied and not messed with. If you removed the cooler and didn't use new thermal paste, that could be the issue.

Well if you cant get a bottle of isopropyl, you can get alcohol pads/swabs at your local pharmacy. That should do the job.

Okay thanks mate, when I run it now I just keep monitoring temps and as soon as it gets above 50 or so I power off and give it 10 mins to cool right down. Will get some isopropyl today and keep the thread updated

UPDATE: Re applied arctic 5 paste after cleaning CPU and cooler plate with 100% isopropyl alcohol. Will see how this goes

Just stop using it for a while, and turn it back on after you repasted and reseated the cooler
