My motherboard died few days ago, and i just bought a replacement one, but i have a problem. Since i have an OEM version of windows it wont work on this motherboard.

How will i be able to get around backing up my SSD and HDD into this new motherboard, do i have to back up or can i dump my SSD stuff into my HDD and run fine? I mean since windows is on the SSD it wont boot up properly with the new mobo. Help appreciated.

The best solution is to install your SSD to a different computer, but boot from that other computer's operating system. Connect your SSD to an unused SATA port, NOT the sata port that the drive the computer boots from. Then you can copy your files/data/pictures to an external drive. You will not be able to copy programs installed on the SSD, they will have to be re-installed once the new OS is installed on the SSD back in your original computer.

It was suggested above to disconnect the HDD when installing the OS on the SSD once it is back in your computer. That is just to make sure certain files do not get installed on the HDD during the OS installation process. Once the OS install is done, power off the computer and re-connect...
Hey there, NASUS1996.

As you've already mentioned, you won't be able to use the installed version of Windows which you already have, with the new motherboard. Unfortunately the only thing you can do is make a fresh install of Windows (I recommend that you have just the SSD connected to the computer during the installation process) and when you are done, connect the HDD and backup all the data you have left on it. Then reformat it so that there are no traces left of the old OS, in order to use it as a secondary storage drive and you're done. If you want you can transfer back the data which you have backed up, if you need it on the HDD as well.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the answer, does this mean that there's no way i can retrieve whats inside my SSD right now? I was thinking that i keep the HDD only connected, and leave the ssd out at first, then install windows on HDD and keep everything on the SSD once its all setup, or is this not possible, since the same will happen(that i will have to delete everything on the drive to install windows).

Is it possible that i connect the SSD to another computer and retrieve the information from it to a external Harddrive?

You mentioned that i keep the SSD connected only during the installation, does it mean i can keep the files/documents while installing a new windows7 on it, or does it automatically delete my old stuff if i would want to do that. I dont think i understood this part exactly.

Power off the computer, before disconnecting or re-connecting any SSD or HDD.
